A crash course in changing the world.

think and act big – don’t do anything that can’t reach a million people

I choose this 'secret' because it is the one I have the most resistance to. I live in quite an innovative way--probably spending less than $2/day, and I do it in a place where most people spend far more. My life is comfortable and possible because I live in a niche where there is very little competition.

Were I to try to encourage a million people to follow my example I do not think my simple way of life could be so easy or relatively luxurious.

I wish to focus my work not so much in Africa or the global south, but in the Global North where there are enormous advantages to be realized by reducing consumption.

So what could I do in the United States and even in southern California that could encourage others to reduce the amount of income and also consumption required in their day to day lives?

People there can:
  • find ways of living without using cars
  • find ways of drastically reducing or eliminating any rent they pay
  • find ways of reducing utilities, food, energy, and other life-maintenance costs
And what could I do in that way that would reach a million people--and encourage them to act on it?

There have already been movements such as "voluntary simplicity", and other things in that vein.

So-- I've thought about this secret, but have not come to any clear ideas about how to apply it in the culture I am choosing, so far, to work within.

For the time being I may continue to not 'think and act big' but rather to seek and target niches where few people are. I am seeking work guiding trips in the back country, and in particular seek to guide walks for others to centers of earthcare and peoplecare.

By learning to live in the wilderness and walk, they will begin to learn how to live more simply when they are out of the woods as well.

is one example of the kind of social innovation I have been most interested in working on.

best wishes and blessings,
Colin

I've been mulling over your words as I read this secret differently from you. To me - this secret tells us that in order to make a single large scale change happen, your change has to be able to happen at a large scale. But you are reading it more broadly than I did and both the consequences and your insights are quite profound. Still mulling it over. Thanks for this!

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
