A crash course in changing the world.
Resourcefulness and Energy
I will admit. I use to be one of those people - you know - the ones who believe in wasting as much energy as possible and who laugh at "Earth Hour" and see no reason to watch the temperature of the AC. However, the more I study culture and learn about those who have nothing, the more I see the necessity of saving as much as possible as well as the ridiculous nature of excess. I am incredibly interested in the trend of biodiesel as a form of energy, but at the moment am unable to pursue my own homegrown "goop." I can, however, work on small ways to change my mindset about the use of electricity around my home - and in the process - save money (yay!) and provide more accessible energy for others.
So here's my action: I am notorious for keeping lights on - ask my husband. My goal is to keep the lights off as much as possible. And since it's spring here in Texas, I am going to try to keep the AC as high as possible and keep the windows open. This may not be providing a new way of energy, but - it certainly is a power shift.
Finally, I'm going to be spreading the word about these creative minds who have developed sustainable solutions to energy. (I mean, a fridge run off sustainable energy? Really?! So cool. And so brilliant. Stuff like that needs to be shared.) Hopefully, through my conservation as well as my communication, people will be inspired to research their own ways to provide sustainable energy for others.
Here are some other ingenious ideas probably worth sharing:
Bill Gross and his solar cells
Saul Griffin and his wind energy through kites.

Use one electric generator hooked up to a small water fall that continuously gets power from the running water.

You'll find that switching lights off makes a big difference to your bills too, so you can spend your money on better things. Win win!

What would it take for you to be completely comfortable living your life at the normal ambient temperature for your area?

@Turil - that's a rough question, primarily because during the summer months people in my area go into heat exhaustion without any ac or air movement. it gets incredibly hot - 100+ degrees - but it's not dry heat. humidity makes it feel even hotter. this past summer, our thermostat would read 95 degrees around 11 pm. so right now? not much. we had our doors/windows open yesterday and it felt great inside our apartment. during july/august? we'll definitely have our ac on - just not as low as we have in the past. even with windows/doors open - it would fly past 100 degrees pretty quickly. ice water and sleeveless shirts with shorts only goes so far.... :)

Fourth of July on the Lake
This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal.
