Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

The link below is to a TED Talk given by world-renowned storyteller Mallika Sarabhai.

http://www.ted.com/talks/mallika_sarabhai.html

In it, Ms. Sarabhai discusses how storytelling, that most ancient of human pastimes, has the possibility of being used to effectively get people thinking about major issues affecting the community and the world at large. She claims that, more than a lecture or an awareness campaign, art and storytelling succeed in bypassing certain filters within us and access a deep-down level of ourselves that can stir us to really think about something.

Storytelling exists in all cultures and has done so for thousands of years. Imagine if people around the world used this medium to pass on useful skills and information, raise awareness of a particular issue, or reinforce certain values and practices that are important to that particular people.

Bob Dylan wrote a song that got an imprisoned man a retrial and eventual freedom. The power of art and stories has been demonstrated throughout history. I believe that it can serve us today in the same way.

Thanks for this link, James. I am going to watch it now. I think my Evoke will have to do with story telling. I am thinking of a storytelling festival ... I think stories are magic, they manage get a message across for things that we normally have efficient filters to avoid. Good stories, good storytellers can reframe the way we understand. Stories are like music they can run around in our heads when we have ceased to think about them and be there to alert us to things we are not even consciously looking for.
Going to listen now!
Best wishes

Thanks for the link to the TED talk on storytelling. Some of my favourite books have to do with storytelling and so I'm such I'll appreciate that talk.

I write stories, so I am absolutely biased in favor of the power of storytelling. This is a brilliant video. The departmentalized nature of the US education system and the devaluing of the arts is frightening, so it's always good to see people talking about it. Thanks for this!

Indeed! Storytelling is what we all do, we just don't always realize it. And paying attention to what kinds of stories we're telling ourselves and the world is so helpful in writing a better future for everyone. :-)

Also, you might like my vision for the next Evoke game: EVOKE 2.0 - the 3D Story of the Earth. :-)

I've been excited by other agents in the game talking about storytelling, so thanks James, PJE, Elora, Mita, and Hanna!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
