A crash course in changing the world.
Look no farther!
People in developing countries often look to the West for examples of progress and innovation instead of looking at their own backyard. Many can easily name the tallest building in Chicago without a blink of an eye but fall from the sky if you tell them that the architect of the building was a Bangladeshi, a man whose design since has revolutionized construction of skyscrapers.
A few years back when we first started talking about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Bangladesh, very often people would cite wonderful examples of its practice in the West and attribute it as a luxury of the resource rich MNCs and dismiss CSR practice as something not possible for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) operating in a developing country. Rising to the challenge to dispel such a myth, we organized a series of Roundtable discussions where leading CSR practitioners were invited to share their views and experiences in practicing CSR in Bangladesh.
The Roundtables were attended by young CEOs, professionals, academics, government representatives and the media, and played a major role in our efforts to sensitize and raise awareness among stakeholders as well as helped develop a common understanding of CSR in Bangladesh. Citing specific examples, the practitioners impressed upon the participants the richness of local practice that many kept returning month after month to hear of more examples of "home-grown" CSR.
Inspired by the examples of local practice, many of the participants easily identified with the practitioners and some embraced CSR practice in their own companies.

Nick leading the way is too strong a choice of words - I hope i did not convey the wrong impression - there are many examples of companies doing good and doing it well but there are many more of what should not be done. And sadly they still in the majority!

Ah, there's always a danger that people will say "Oh, we can't do that!" in any enterprise - it's always too simple to make excuses or defer to those who you think have a headstart. I'm so glad that that attitude is being worn away here! Stepping out of the shadow of your 'perceived' betters is utterly critical - especially when those 'betters' are really much worse than you think :)
