Listen to the right people. In my geography class today, my professor asked the class if we would be scared going to Africa. When the class replied with a few shrugs and a lot of "I don't know... I guess..." phrases she explained that there are multiple different kinds of regions in Africa. The next question was whether or not we would be scared going to a slum in Africa. I raised my hand with the group that said they would be, but I really had no idea. A classmate then raised her hand and shared her first-hand experience while being in an African slum. She explained that what she had encountered was scary and a huge cultural shock for any American traveler. Listening to her story allowed me to have a better grasp on the what really happens rather than just going on pure assumption or what I think something might be like.
