Ushahidi Asheville - Tracking the gas supply

As Asheville residents learned a few years back, as a geographically isolated city we have a very tenuous supply of fuel. When hurricanes Gustav and Ike plowed through the southern coast, it shut down fuel deliveries to a bare trickle. And what's worse, most of the fuel trucks heading our way were emptied long before they got near us, and the high mountain pa**** cost so much more in transportation fuel costs that many shippers opted to save fuel and reserve their deliveries for the flatlands.

Within days, Asheville was nearly out of gas. Stations were closing left and right, people were waiting in gas lines for hours on end and businesses suffered from massive manpower shortages as employees ran out of fuel to come to work. Our city government even cut back on days to conserve fuel and prevent workers from getting stranded. People couldn't get to work and school, they couldn't get to medical care or pick up prescriptions and they couldn't buy groceries or other large-purchase items that required transportation. The few fuel trucks that made it through were stalked to their stations and stations ran out almost as soon as they refueled from people rushing in to buy gas.

It didn't take long for the criminal element to raise its ugly head, either. Almost immediately you had people siphoning gas from their neighbors or from commercial and government fleets. And on the other end of things, you had station owners who were using the shortage to gouge already desperate people by charging well more than it cost them to purchase gas.

Ushahidi would have been a godsend during the shortage for locating stations that were open, identifying and avoiding gougers, theives and profiteers, following news about deliveries and pipeline recovery and for organizing carpools and emergency transportation for those in need.

I really look forward to seeing how this incredible technology grows in the future. Maybe next time we face another gas shortage here in Asheville, we'll be better equipped to deal with it by using this powerful tool.

Wow! great idea! We should definately keep that in mind!
As a NC resident too, I really wish that we had used that plan.

Seriously. I just happened to be lucky enough to live a block from a station where hubby is friends with the owners, so we got good intel quickly. But for less lucky folks, it was a freaking nightmare.

This is really connecting the dots! What would it take to get that ready, I wonder.

Someone has to set up a local Ushahidi instance on servers or something like that, and then spread the word in the area about how to use it. Not my area of geekspertise, I'm afraid.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
