Dark-Sites: Why they are not viable solution

While many agents may celebrate the idea of dark-sites they have many problems that have been overlooked. I am going to eloberate some of these so people may eventually finds way to get around such issues.

1. The internet may not be up.

One agent created a dark-site for a country under military invasion. Another agent put up a dark site for countries that are rioting. Here is the thing in any military op the first thing to do is to cut off the flow of information. The second is to tap the existing flow of information and utilize that edge by either attacking the rebellion or by sowing seeds of sedition. Either way your dark site is off little use.

In other cases of natural disasters there is no gurantee that the cables that connect the internet to major servers can be cut. These infostructures are not protected. Something even more feisible is the loss of power. Without power electronic access to internet is very limited thus making dark sites not even operational in the middle of the disaster.

2. The users may not be in a state to get information

In the cases of outbreak some symptoms may be debilitating causing the person to have blurry vision, lack of hand eye cordination, or other symptions that make uses of electronics harder. Thus those in most need of the information will most likely not be able to access the information.

3. Competing sources of information

Thing about the dark sites is that they are competing against more popular sources of information and government actions. When it comes to google these sites will not even come up high enough for people to even know they exist. Your site is going to be on the bottom of the pile of blog and news reports. So for your site to be effective you have to be on the top search engines. This means it is best that your site is in existence before hand and is proven to be a legitmate source of information.

I think that the intent of creating a dark site was a good idea but the fact is that there is a lot of factors against it even being operation. If you forget or unable from activating your site when it is needed then it's no good to anyone.

Yes, these things should have been obvious to the reader... at least they were to me. The theme for the mission was about countering "misinformation" which any amount of research should yield adequate answers assuming you have internet. If you don't have internet, then what's the point of a dark site?

I then am lead to the conclusion that the mission was not about "dark sites" so much as it was about propaganda and placation.

I agree. This is the problem with the Evoke missions is that they are to technology and internet driven. If you take the internet away you loose have of the missions and projects.

Yes, but shouldnt we plan for the 99% of disasters, rather than the 1%?

Agree Gabriel, there will always be a worst case scenerio but that shouldn't stop anyone. Evoke has an eye on the future which will be technology driven.

PS That's not to say we shouldn't be aware of the downfalls so thanks for posting darklogos.

A dark site is not a plan for a disaster. If a disaster occurs, the information for an answer either exists or it doesn't. I highly doubt a dark site is going to be providing any new information that doesn't already exist in more popular media. The idea behind the "dark site" was that it only becomes active after the disaster... that seems pretty counter intuitive, doesn't it? Shouldn't you have been prepared beforehand?

That's not what a "dark site" was for. It's to counter "misinformation" (i.e. propaganda). Anyone who follows a logical path of reasoning and has a halfway skeptical viewpoint of information should not have a need for propaganda when they can research the topic themselves.

The big issue is this. The way google and any other search engine works will put any dark site we create at the bottom of the search list. Most people don't go past page 2 of searches let alone to page 6 through 10 where most of the dark sites are going to land.

When it comes to dark sites your site has to be viable to the situation. If you are in a combat situation guess what internet is not your friend. It is the biggest point that can be compromized. In the case of a bilogical outbreak if the disease hinders sight, judgment, or coordination the internet is not going to work. In the case of natural disasters the chance of the power going out goes up a lot. Heck when it ices in Tulsa and Kansas City the power goes out let alone a major natural disasters.

yes, and in any remote locations, differences in information access/sharing and technologies must be accounted for, and backup, black-out and cut-chain plans must be in place, or at least outlined.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
