Totally agree. This story shows that no one is secure. We all know Japan with its great achievements in technology and lifestyle. Tokyo, the heart of Japan, is an economic giant. Simple problems can cause much trouble to complex economic structures like these in Japan, USA, etc. Another point of view is that people kinda get used to hearing about famine in Somalia and little is done. What if it happens in a big rich country like Japan, country of a great importance to the world's economy and marketing? Will you care then? I bet you will! Then think about Somalians and use the same approach, try to eliminate famine there because:
- famine is possible in Japan after 10 years and things will get ugly
- if we don't eliminate famine in Africa many African countries could be gone in 10 years.

Think about it! The purpose of this story is to raise awareness.

The story gives Tokyo as an example but I think it's trying to tell us that this is a problem that could occur anywhere that is troubled by overpopulation, urban spread and bad planning for the future. I think it's important that countries like this should have people trained in planning for a sustainable future and that people in charge should be more actively involved so that they arenot like the govenor in this story, uninformed.
OK.. ill go like this ..
On a first page.. we see situation that has all ready escalated .. there is no going back and there is no more food .. Let's be honest 1 month ... left .. there is no way they could ever do anything to help .. the period of growing some food is far more then 1 month ... So the first page tells us we have to act on time .. and good time to act is not tomorrow , or today.. it was yesterday ...
To prevent hunger they would have to start population control .. or better said birth control so they don't overpopulate .. Said but true fact ..You can create thousands of tons of rice or what ever food but you have production limit.. so they should calculate # of population and monthly needs/ person ..
If they change there ways how they eat is the only way for them to get 100% optimisation on food needs ..
No more trowing food.. create more farms.. Engineer faster growing rice .. create more nutrition ed rice .. instead of daily body needs of some grams/kg reduce it from lets make an example 300g/person to 50g.. that would increase 600% feeding ability of nation .. We have big eyes not big smacks ..
To be honest currently I'm eating herb life food .. and i have 7 meals a day but 600ml of milk 1 banana 1 apple and launch what i eat .. about 50g of proteins .. and i feel excellent ..
Before this i was eating 3-4 times more then now .. As we all saw in sci-fi movies or series they eat some type of packed food .. that contains needed dose of calories/vitamins. day ..
Prepare some kind of food mixture for a complete year and make sure that if they ever get in that problem they will be able to survive 1 more year and not only 1 month ..

In a picture 2 we see control center.. activation of evoke and response from evoke..
Lets say this works like it should .. response would be fast .. but it will be all ready 2 late .. because evoking takes time .. and activating individuals is all ready late .. they need to all ready have plans what to do .. and i guess this website has goal to do just that .. to create scenario how to prevent something before problem escalates .. so i believe waiting for a call for help is all ready wait evoke should offer help before they are needed ..

Picture 3 ..
Ember is a professor .. she is working with students but she is hiding her identity of being an evoke!
Why ?? Why is she hiding that she is helping others? Why should this be a secret .. As i said in one of my blog posts .. children are solution for all problems .. ask them and you will receive true answer ...
Disappearing act .. it means she is not person on witch other can count on ..
I know this is a story but my interpretation is like this ..
Also why would she hide in Tokyo ? Her goal is to help them no need for secrecy ..

Page 4 Tokyo will fix others .. hardly to believe.. we live in times when Main City's don't always help smaller ones .. I live 70km from main city and now when we have basically everything they are still taking everything from us and giving us only what we need .. My place is basically farm city and we have biggest land area in over country .. we produce more food then complete country needs.. and every year they lower the prices on grain corn and other land products we make .. So my theory is Tokyo won't be able to help others before it's to late and riots will start .. people migration and they will have to use force to prevent people entering Tokyo ..

Picture 5..
A guy all ready working on a one project .. Clearly it ways even all the market is down and they are producing honey they still have problems .. It means some corporation is controlling the market and it's not letting them in .. 100% ..
yes it's all about profit and if you don't take it someone else will .. And that is the truth ..
Solving more then 1 problem is always a good idea .. but by doing that you may leave the right path what you were on .. I know that multi planing is good .. and yes that is awesome but it has it's down side of removing #1 thing to #1.1

Picture 6 ..
Ultimatum .. if you ask me ..
They have no other option then to give 50% of there profits or they will die .. have riots or what ever ..
It would be better if it was said .. when you get out of the problems after 1-2 years you will giving us a 50% profit and not ask from them something they cant give at that moment ..
If they solve problem they need to invest more and more so that problem never comes up again ..
If they solve that problem 100% and have continues time of 100% then it's time to ask for something back in return ..

Picture 7
Response team is on a field an now we need to find a solution before they get there .. Japan has to start thinking now.. if they are gonna get in that situation ..
As i have read some of clues they all ready had problems with supplying some foods to there stores .. and prices of breed went up 30% .. so ACT YESTERDAY !!! NOT TODAY! NOT TOMORROW

Well this was my side of story :)
In episode one, japan was faced with a grave problem of a food shortage. I think that if japan had started other types of growing methods, and instead of rice, they could have grown a variety of foods. Also famine should not be an option for the country, so i agree with the, "mayor's assistant," in that they need us to help.

This image is a greenhouse skyscraper, that could potentially help japan's food shortages.
Essentially all Social Innovations provide a win-win situtaion for all. In this case, the EVOKE network will help fix Tokyo and gain 50% Profit. The government gains credibility from its people for solving the food situation and the people are happy because they will not only starve but also know how to prevent future occurence!
Wow - I am amazed by the huge variety of ideas and insight displayed here by all of you! Has been a great read so far.

My 2 cents :
- Ember mentions on page 3 problems caused by "mass migration" in 2016. I am guessing this might have had to do with global warming - shrinking land ma****? droughts?

- Evoke seems to be headquartered out of Africa - the continent that has the greatest "food security" issues currently. This would suggest that they fixed their problems somehow, and have now become the experts on the issue.

- Secrecy might be because if people knew who they were, they would become susceptible to petitioning, politics, bribery, and might become less able to just do the job. For example, the United Nations is often paralysed by it's own rules: because they must answer to so many people they can't just act when something needs to happen, they have to discuss, vote, etc - and sometimes too many cooks just can't agree on the recipe. Evoke, as shown in episode 1, seems to work because when Alchemy says jump, his agents do.
(Not sure that I agree with this attitude, but it's the only reason I can think they would have to be secretive).

- While the food shortage is unlikely to be fixed in the space of a month by growing things, I think Evoke has the resources to supply food from overseas while they are setting up the infrastructure required long term. They talk about leaving Tokyo with thousands of food security specialists, which suggests they'll be training people up at the same time - who will then be able to help people regionally. I disagree with the view that city people wouldn't help rural people in a time of crisis - I know city people who are volunteer fireman who helped in the Victorian fires last year, others that have helped with floods, and there are always funding drives to help. In a situation like this, when you've been trained as a food security expert, of course you'd go help your country cousins.
Hello nemanja!
You have done such a great deal of work to break the problem down. This is wonderful. I would like to make an observation on the first page to begin with;
Recently, having used the census statistics to produce a business plan that is international, I discovered an interesting trend. The baby-boomers, those over 40 years of age was slowing dwindling due to disease and death, which is no secret. The real surprise is that the smaller portion of the total population is shrinking. This means that the group between birth and 35yrs is not going to survive their youth. We no longer have over-population to deal with, to my knowledge. It is quality of life and longevity that we must focus on. This will require better food standards, education of the populus in how to grow, choose, store, and prepare nutritious food. This does not mean that your model and growth suggestions are not important. They are very much so. I will address your pages that followed in other emails. Be In Good Health.

You guys have done an awesome job ! Did you think of posting your facts to the wiki ? ;)
There is no way print media exists in 2020!
Hmm, an interesting suggestion. Why not ?

It is said that "stitching on time save the nine". Tokyo and some other countries which are not vulnerable right now in connection with Famine/Food shortage but in future can be. So the right planning, vision and innovation can help to create support mechanisms. The Episode 1 calls for pro active and innovative thinking on the issue.
Wow! Love the skyscraper! For densely populated cities, this concept would be worthwhile as a future solution. They could be built as a supplement to food consumed from domestic or foreign agriculture sources. The Netherlands has large green houses that produce tomatoes. They are not as space efficient as this concept however. I say supplement because I think there are many countries that are more efficient and need less resources to produce food for the world. They could benefit from a more robust agricultural trade.
Laura Dawson has listed some interesting URLs. I have to investigate the information on them. Her approach is excellent. Individually we are all aware of different collections of information. Let's make other member aware of them.
Thirty days of reserves is not a long time to get supplies to such a large city. Tokyo is an organized city. Someone with city planning experience and maybe local knowledge of Tokyo, should suggest a means of efficient distribution of whatever food stuff we can produce immediately. The organized infrastructure should keep us from problems that aid workers seem to be experiencing in Haiti with poor local infrastructure and city planning.
My thoughts on "Episode 1". The content is realistic. How the 50% profit concept shakes out will be interesting. I do believe in projects like Nobel winner Muhammad Yunus's Grameen Bank. Sustainability of an organization will rely on good corporate governance and business management as well as donations and volunteers.

I think Japan is used to warn us about how even the more "powerful" nations are at risk. Of course they are considering they are so dependant on "poorer" countries to supply them with the basics.
Japan seems to have grown in such an exaggerated western way. A good example are the existing convenience stores in Japan I heard about on a television report. These stores are everywhere and are not only more expensive, but offer less quality than the traditional market place. They might be seen as a big contribution to their economy but seem to blinding people because they are so conviently located. In the long run they end up distancing consumer´s from basic needs and the importance of producing primary resources.
I will try to find something about these convenience stores on the net and post it.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More
