Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I'd like to start a reading group here on Evoke.

I've got a shocking proposal: I propose that members of this group read books (dead tree or electronic formats, your choice...) and then discuss them.

Shocking, I know.

Fiction and non-fiction, just so long as someone considers that the book has something to do with Evoke.

Anyone interested?

Book 1, Chosen by Kevin DiVico

Good Morning Agents ... The book i choose to start is

Title: The power of unreasonable people : how social entrepreneurs create markets that change the world by John Elkington (Author), Pamela Hartigan (Author), Klaus Schwab (Foreword)

the reason I choose this book is that it was published recently (so hopefully takes into the account the current economic reality's rather then looking at the subject from a pre crash view) and from the fact it contains a look at all the models of what can be done - as seen in this snippet from a MAazon review.

"This book lays out a classification of different kinds of social entrepreneurs, ranging from pure charity to pure business. This is the strongest element of the book, since other popular books have not explicitly discussed the fact that all are possible. The book also tries to provide case studies, and indeed I took notes of things to go look up further. However the case studies are to brief and scattered to really be useful. "

I'm thinking a http://www.adastragames.com/downloads/RPGs/Minimus.pdf Minimus system in a slightly dystopian 2020. Playing with the EVOKE concept.

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
In this what's-next business manifesto, "social entrepreneurs" Elkington and Hartigan run with a quote from playwright George Bernard Shaw: "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man." Using that thesis, the authors argue that the best place to find tomorrow's revolutionary business models is on the unpredictable fringes of the mainstream market. There, they find cases like Jack Sim and his Singapore-based World Toilet Organization, who have ingeniously improved living conditions worldwide (and goosed profits) by, among other schemes, convincing governments and corporations to compete for cleanest public restroom honors. The heart of the book are the case studies, of both for-profit and nonprofit social organizations (many of them in Asian and Indian countries), which are mined for ideas and theories regarding their impact on global markets and local communities. Elkington (The Chrysalis Economy) and Hartigan also give nods to such well-known enterprises as Wh*** Foods, One Laptop Per Child, and Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8. Written with a business-magazine style, Elkington and Hartigan's eye-opening work and noble intent-bridging business ac**en and social awareness-make a convincing case for unconventional entrepreneurship.

...a fascinating book... --Economist.com, January 22, 2008

...there is no doubting the validity of the message. --The Financial Times, January 25, 2008

Capitalism is a very mutable, flexible beast, and what we re seeing is social entrepreneurs addressing some of these social challenges in profoundly different ways than traditional nonprofit organizations, said John Elkington, co-author with Pamela Hartigan of The Power of Unreasonable People: How Social Entrepreneurs Create Markets that Change the World, a new book that was handed out last month to attendees at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. --The New York Times, February 24, 2008
I'd like to get in on this too!
OK, I'm in, and I see my library has Kevin's book.

Keep me posted if you decide to run an EVOKE RPG, Brian, although I suspect that could mean a bigger time commitment than I can give at this time. But I'd be curious to see it in action.
I hope I'll be able to read these books in between my studies in order to comment, please keep posting recomended books. I will try my best, if I may join your group. Will this be where we discuss the books ?
Oooh, people! Time to move to a self-scaling network. Everyone has explicit permission to join this book group and read our book of the week. Next week's book chooser will be chosen randomly from the people who post blog entries tagged BOOK1.

For people interested in RPG1: http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/minimus-evoke-the-rpg has details, so we don't fork this thread.
Brain , This is really very good idea but problem is how to get that book.......... If any body can share electronic copy to my email : brain8work@yahoo.com . I would be gratefull.
Howdy mate, I recommend your local library. On this public forum, I really cannot advocate blatant copyright infringment. (As that probably wouldn't get me power votes.)

To everyone, i'm extending our "deadline" by another week, considering the difficulty people seem to be having in finding the book. I may or may not choose someone else to choose a second book in parallel on the 13th, depending on how many people are reading this one. Please, let me know if you're reading the book.

Hi Everyone,

in lieu of the problem of getting the book, I called the publisher Harvard Business group today and asked if they could donate 12 damaged copies to our reading group. I sent them a email with links to the game, full bio on the game creator, and a link to our reading group. If they have the damaged copies, Ill pay for the postage and then get your address and send them out to you all. I only asked for 12 copies which will be distributed based on the greatest need.

As soon as I know anything Ill post it here.

Namaste

Kevin
Can everyone check in with their progress? My library hasn't gotten its copy back yet.

Hello everyone,

I got a reply from Josh at Harvard publishing.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for sending this email. I forwarded your request to our fulfillment department. If we were to receive damaged copies from a return, we could probably send those to you. However, it was confirmed that there are no damaged copies of Power of Unreasonable People available at this time.

I couldn’t get permission to send free copies of our normal (non-damaged) stock to your club. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Josh Miedema

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
