Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

One of the professions most needed in the developing world is that of an engineer or architect to start to build up the infrastructure of the area. For anyone to get to that point they have to master mathematics. In order help agents in developing countries to acquire that knowledge, it may be useful for those of us with mathematical backgrounds to offer our services as tutors. I would certainly be willing to do that. I would like to get together a group of us here to offer that service to agents in the developing world who are students. Often, the time constraints involved in running a classroom make it difficult for a student to get his questions answered in class. Another service we can provide is to give the students information about the applicability of mathematics. My father, who grew up in a rural area, was good at algebra in high school, but he did not pursue it, because no one could explain to him what it was useful for.

I definitely agree with you that mathematics is a very important skill to succeed in many fields. I also wanted to add for that those who are able to attend schools in the U.S. there are very respected Architecture programs in the U.S. that do not require an extensive background in Math and/or Science in order to get accepted into them. Most of the Art schools, such as Pratt, or California College of the Arts stress an good academic record, but most importantly a strong creative portfolio. These days, architecture is becoming more idea and design focussed with a lot of computer-use, so the math components of the education are not as heavy. Truly it is good to have the math capability, but I am just providing hope for those who KNOW they could be good designers but are intimidated by the heavy math/science required for some architectural programs. Lastly, City College of San Francisco has an excellent architecture program. This is the 2nd highest rated community college in the US, and one of the least expensive educations to be had. Their international student population is quite high.
Bryan, You are very right, people in developing countries really really lack in mathematics and engineering side thats why you can see the disasters in infrastructure poorly designed and developed. I can give you example of South Asia speciallyPakistan where country is investing lots of billion dollors in infrastructure but at the end its sustainablity is always questionable. This is only due to poor mathematics/engineering skills they have.
I would support your idea, and can you please explain what is in your mind, how do you want lead the learners online??????
I'm willing to tutor in Math (or something else), just let me know how I can reach them.
I was thinking of a form-based question and answer format like what has already been set up by the evoke librarians. I see what I can come up with in the next several days. If anyone has a better idea let me know.

The one thing I am struggling with is that anyone who has access to the web already has a virtually cornucopia of mathematics info. I would really like to help high school students with little or no access to computers, but I'm not sure how to accomplish that. I suppose we could just put together free arithmetic, algebra, geometry or calculus practice sheets or short packages on various math topics. We could then disperse such materials on the web for teachers with web access to obtain for their students.
I have set up a URL where agents can go to post questions for evoke math tutors.
Submit your question at the following link and we'll get back to you.

Anyone who wants to be a math tutor should friend me and send me a message. I'll tell you what you need to know to get started.

A very good suggestion ! Not only do mathematics help cope with very complex problems - not only of the theoretical kind, but also of the pratical kind - but they're also independent from language which means that nowadays, two mathematicians should be able to communicate through their art (yes, I tend to see mathematics as an art form) !

Did you guys get in touch with the Calling all teachers group to try and get educational professionals together ? Also, don't forget to add yourself on the wiki !
This might also be of interest--there are many math tutorials here

The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit organization and is run by one man who started by creating some math tutorials for his little cousin.
Would you mind creating a page for your group on the wiki and add that in the corresponding resources section, Kath ? Thanks !

Last post is already two weeks old, still something going on here? I could help out with answering questions. I am unsure if a spreadsheet is the ideal platform, but it sure is a good start!

I like the question/answer platform concept of stackoverlfow/mathoverflow. However this would a considerable amount of work to set up.

Cheers, Chris

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
