Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

=====Breaking News======

There are now 8 teacher projects, and we're starting to make tracks. Come sign up for one -- see the wiki for details!

=====================

There have been many posts in other threads about getting a group of teachers together here on EVOKE. I'd like to pull us together. Here's my suggestion:

1. In this thread, post who you are and what you teach -- or, if you're a teacher-type but not actually a teacher, like me, tell us what you do. Tell us also where you're from!

2. Check out the google doc that happyseaurcin started -- it has ideas about how to engage teachers in EVOKE.

3. Take a look at the wiki (http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/) and visit the Calling All Teachers page. Add your name (and a link back to your EVOKE profile, if you like) if you'd like to collaborate. If you have an idea for a project, add it to the brainstorming section.

Let's see if we can get traction over the next couple of weeks and maybe pick an idea or two to develop more fully!

** Posted in grateful acknowledgment of everyone who added comments to the collaboration page, with hopes that this thread makes it easier for us to find each other. **

Hi Hanna -- I love that idea. I know there are some little networks like this in place already; the Flat Classroom project, for instance, connects teachers and their cla**** in different parts of the world (see http://www.flatclassroomproject.org/). Maybe we can build on those?

If you haven't yet, I encourage you to list this project idea in the EVOKE wiki on the Calling All Teachers page so that others can express their interest there. I'll go look for your new thread, too. Thanks for posting here!
I'm in California too, SF Bay Area

Great work Agent Brain (that has to be my favourite EVOKE Agent name so far by the way). I'm giving you +50 knowledge share for your initiative.

Awesome. I was just at CUE, and spoke on Game Design in the classroom, ending with showing urgent evoke. Moments ago my middle school brand new lunch club, Dragons Evoke, began playing together. We'll have a dozen wonderful young people and a few teachers taking part together.

Thank you.

My EVOKE name is Ninmah, my RL name is Rachel Smith. I'm a former teacher who now researches emerging technologies for teaching and learning. I have a deep love of games and hope to work on projects that bring more games into classrooms. I'm from California in the US.
rafi.ki is an international network of schools already doing a lot of this kind of thing. It is free to schools in the U.S., while a charge for schools in the EU. The organization is in the UK. International focus on collaborative projects, often involving hundreds of classrooms. Just getting my feet wet in the flow of things there. Met some teachers from Hong Kong when they visited our campus in California who turned me on to this.

Hello everyone,

I am not a teacher, but I have an idea. For now I am calling it Conduit. The idea is to establish a network of teachers across the globe who will then connect their classrooms through teleconferencing equipment. The purposes vary - from changing the way language is taught in the US, to non-linguistic games that can be played with children who do not speak the same language, to providing technology to places that cannot afford it.

I'm going to be adding a thread and more posts about this, but I thought this would be a good place to feel out some preliminary interest.

I am going to need game designers, local experts, and technology buffs, but teachers and education experts who are willing to get involved will be the base and the most important part of getting this going.

I really feel like this could do some serious good. Ignorance is one of the major things we battle with EVOKE, and apathy is perhaps worse. By seeing and interacting with people across the world we create a connection. When that country appears on the news, it will not be faceless.

Anyway, let me know if this is the kind of thing the EVOKE teachers would like to pursue. Keep with the awesome.
@ninmah and @Jeff, thanks for the links!

I had not found flat classrooms, but I had seen rafi.ki on this site. There is also www.schoolsonline.org, run by Relief International. I have not had time to go through them extensively, but all of them look pretty awesome. I think I may have found one run by the US government too. I'll post it if it turns out to be so.

Maybe getting it started would just mean offering a wider network for people already already interested in participating (and who have the technology). I still feel like this should be wider spread, and the proof that it can be done and does work is encouraging. And we don't have to reinvent the wheel ^_^

It looks like the three are geared towards high school and middle school. Anyone know of something that does the same thing, but focuses on college students?

Has anyone participated in any of these programs?

I still think there is room for us in the sandbox, so to speak. I continue my research. ^_^
Hi Jackie, and welcome to the teachers' thread! I'm glad you posted. With your interest in using tools like EVOKE in the classroom, you might find this report on challenge-based learning helpful:

Challenge-Based Learning: An Approach for Our Time
http://www.nmc.org/publications/challenge-based-learning

It describes a pilot project undertaken last year by Apple that trained teachers at five schools, and supported them as they did a unit using teaching techniques that are very much like what EVOKE does. Take a look, if you haven't seen it -- I think it might be right up your alley.

If you haven't added your name and ideas to the teacher wiki, please do that too, so that we can easily match you up with teachers who might want to do something like this. Thanks! (The wiki is at http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/ -- look for the page called "Calling All Teachers.")
Hanna, thanks for the link to SchoolsOnline, which I had not seen. I don't know of anything exactly like this that links college cla****, although I know of some courses that have "sister courses" in other countries. Definitely room in the sandbox :-)

i have a job interview tomorrow
and i will tell the kids and the teacher interviewing me about this game

the list of teachers on the google doc remains rather short
i'm afraid...
the blog looks healthier:

well done!
Thanks, happyseaurchin. Best of luck with your interview tomorrow!
Hello Teachers and Teacher-types,

It's great to see so many people joining in this conversation. The group is growing nicely, and we have some very interesting ideas on the wiki and in the Google doc.

I have a mini-challenge for each of you. I challenge you to reach out to at least one person who might be interested in participating in this discussion and in any projects that come out of it, and get them to post in this thread and/or on the wiki.

It's not difficult to do. If you don't know someone already, just go to the Evidence page and search on "teacher" or "teaching" to find people who are already talking about education issues. Read their posts, and when you find someone who inspires or excites or informs you, friend them, as I did with many of you. Invite them to post here in this thread and to add their name and ideas to the wiki page and/or the Google doc.

I'll be traveling until next Tuesday, so my level of posting will be down, but I'll be keeping an eye on things and chiming in from time to time. If you accept my mini-challenge, let's see how many people we can add to our number by then. Also, now's the time to add project ideas to the wiki page, if you think of them.

Next week, we'll start getting into project groups around ideas that we like so we can plan how to carry them out.

What do you say -- are you up for the challenge?
Hi Willy -- I did see Emily's post and project. I hope some of our teachers will take her up on the offer to learn more about it, and maybe will get involved with something similar in their own classrooms. Thanks!

ninmah,

I support your brilliant idea for all the reasons you have stated and I may add that since the actions taken and that are being taken today are largely due to the learning experiences of the participants since birth, it goes without saying that if things are not going right, we must go to the basics and examine what we are teaching and change it
What an excellent idea, agent ninmah.

Question: is it appropriate to ping the Twitterverse for more Evoke teachers?

Like ninmah, I research and teach emerging technologies for teaching. I also have background as an English professor, teaching writing, fiction, lit theory, and information technology studies.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
