Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

=====Breaking News======

There are now 8 teacher projects, and we're starting to make tracks. Come sign up for one -- see the wiki for details!

=====================

There have been many posts in other threads about getting a group of teachers together here on EVOKE. I'd like to pull us together. Here's my suggestion:

1. In this thread, post who you are and what you teach -- or, if you're a teacher-type but not actually a teacher, like me, tell us what you do. Tell us also where you're from!

2. Check out the google doc that happyseaurcin started -- it has ideas about how to engage teachers in EVOKE.

3. Take a look at the wiki (http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/) and visit the Calling All Teachers page. Add your name (and a link back to your EVOKE profile, if you like) if you'd like to collaborate. If you have an idea for a project, add it to the brainstorming section.

Let's see if we can get traction over the next couple of weeks and maybe pick an idea or two to develop more fully!

** Posted in grateful acknowledgment of everyone who added comments to the collaboration page, with hopes that this thread makes it easier for us to find each other. **

Can you join us on Teachers Teaching Teacher on Wednesday 6:00 p.m. Pacific / 9:00 p.m. Eastern. It would be interesting to hear about how you are working with teachers to use gaming in their classrooms. All you need is Skype, and we will call you into a conference.

Paul, thanks for sharing with us the way you are using EVOKE. That's wonderful! I'm not a teacher anymore, but I am very interested in working with teachers who are using EVOKE or games like it. I'll contact you off this thread to see if I can be of any help, or if you don't need help, to see if it's OK for me to just take part in your conversations. Thanks for inviting other teachers to join you. Very exciting!
My name is Joseph Nadler. I'm an English and Legal Studies teacher in Melbourne, Australia. I'm passionate about human rights and I'm a giant nerd. Hence my presence here. I'll make my way to the wiki as soon as I can!
Calling all teachers. I just wanted to share with you this link from an article in the Guardian Online newspaper. It tells of a fabulous initiative set-up by the equally fabulous Professor Sugata Mitra (of "H*** in the Wall" computers fame). If you are not aware of his work then I also implore you to find out more about his amazing projects.

This project is beautiful in it's simplicity. I quote:

"When I last visited India, I asked the children what they would most like to use Skype for. Surprisingly, they said they wanted British grandmothers to read them fairytales."

Here's the link to the article:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/mortarboard/2010/mar/16/reading...

and a related article:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2010/mar/16/slumdog-millionaire...

I find it hard to read these articles without getting emotional. It is such a simple but massively powerful thing to do. The impact, of course, for the children living in poverty in these Indian slums is huge. Those of us who were lucky enough to be read to when we were children now realise what a formative activity it is. We learn knowledge, morals, ethics, values, how to listen, to question - we learn how to learn!

I see that he is now looking for maths and science teachers to participate. The potential is massive.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Simon
HI Ninmah ,

Pardon the delay in getting back to you here. Ok...if no one has hit the ground running with this I'll organize the campaign to get Evoke into Second Life. If someone has taken the lead on this, I be happy to help any efforts underway.

I'll post this in the wiki as per your suggestion.

Hi Kevin, and thanks for adding your voice to the mix. I'm Ninmah in Second Life, too (Ninmah Ash). A learning center in Second Life would be a great place for conversations, simulations, resources... Would you like to head up this effort? Or just help? Either way, if you haven't already, list it on the teacher wiki page and let's see who else might be interested in working on that. Great idea!
Hi Kevin,

No problem -- all of us agents have secret identities out in the world that sometimes keep us busy ;-) I don't know of any efforts yet to get EVOKE into Second Life. I'm glad you're able to take the lead. Now we need to find out if there are other EVOKE agents already in Second Life.

Teachers, if you have a Second Life avatar, be sure to list it on the wiki under Kevin's project! Thanks, Kevin, for taking the lead on this effort.
Simon,

Sugata Mitra is an amazing innovator, I couldn't agree more. Thanks for those links. I was fortunate enough to hear him speak at the World Innovation Summit for Education in Doha, Qatar last fall, and I too was moved to tears. His work is opening doors that needed to be opened, that's for sure.

Any EVOKE maths or science teachers who may be out there, I encourage you to get involved with Sugata's projects. You won't be sorry.

Thanks for sharing the link, Simon!

Hi Joseph, and welcome to the Teachers group! Please do browse the wiki, and if you haven't already, add any ideas for projects and/or sign up to be involved with some of the ones that are already there. Great to have you in the group!

Hi Teachers:

Evoke Agent Paul Allison is convening a conference call for EVOKE teachers via Skype. Interested in joining us for some teacher talk? The first call will be tomorrow:

Join the EVOKE Teacher Conference (via Skype)
Date: Wednesday, March 17, 2010
Time: 6pm PT / 9 pm ET (check your local time)
How to participate: Send a note to Agent Paul Allison with your Skype name.

If you can't make this call, there will be others! Keep an eye on the opening post in this thread for announcements of each call.
Hi
I'm Monica. Not a teacher but I work at a high school in IL. I'm interesting in participatory culture and how I can bring it to the classroom. I have students who "page" for me (they are suppose to help me perform my daily duties as A/V Manager and Auditorium Manager) but really I mentor students in audio and video production and theater technology. Just found this and still exploring.

At my school some teachers have been looking in to taking one week in the school year were we all -students and teachers- work on a solving a problem together. I'll have them look at this. It would be fun to get multiple schools to work together. Maybe we can work on the school funding crisis.

PS I have a major learning disability that affect my writing skills. lots of grammar mistakes I usually can't find and fix until the next morning- be patient with me :)
Hi Monica, and welcome! Thanks for posting here -- glad to have you in the group. You might take a look at Challenge-Based Learning: An Approach for Our Time, a white paper that describes a pilot project to do the kind of problem-solving you're talking about. I worked on the project, so if you have any questions about it I'd be happy to talk with you.

Also check the teachers' wiki, and maybe post your idea there. We're hoping to form teams to work on different projects, and there might be other teachers and teacher-supporters who want to try something similar.
This project is truly inspirational and I've been asked by Alchemy to feature it on the EVOKE blog. Keep up the good work, agents!
That's marvelous! Thank you, Nathaniel, and thank you, Alchemy. The teachers are an amazing group -- just wait til we really get going! ;-)

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
