It's 21th March, 2020. A strong wind blows as the 1st year celebration of the Wind building is taking place. A very innovative building build in the Baja California's Cost where a great beach was crowned with one of the most environmental friendly buildings in the world
This tall building was called Wind because all its energy needs were solved with wind. To do that the designers took advantage of its big size: 120 floors and 9 blocks of base it´s a lot of space!
The temperature difference from the 1st floor to the 120th was one of the first resources that were embedded into the design as a way to get sustainable energy. A
solar tower was build in the center of the building to do this. Taking advantage of the warm weather at the bottom, this solar tower was used to make a uprising warm wind that was used to generate electricity in the bottom part of the building.
Being right next to the beach it's common to have strong winds, so a full range of vertical
extra efficent windmills are used accordingly to the air force at different heights of the building. Even inside, the design of the building created a cold wind going down to be used as
passive cooling. Even here some extra energy was extracted using many
wind belts spread around the building.
The wind-generated electricity, and a design that improved solar lighting inside of the building during the day were very important to satisfy the need for energy in the building. But the true innovation came from having a warm wind uprising, and a cold wind going down. These air streams were used to control the temperature at each floor, to heat the water, and to keep not-frozen food cold without the need of a refrigerator. This allowed everyone to save more than 50% of electricity consumption*
The celebration of the Wind building is more than celebrating a big project. After this building was made, lots of sustainable projects popped up everywhere around the globe using local resources. That's why, this day is important not only for the Wind building, it´s the celebration of the first project that showed how innovative
uses of available resources can solve old problems in a new way.
* According to: http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/reps/enduse/er01_us_figs.html, in 2001, air conditioning, space heating, HVAC appliances and Water Heating accounts for 40% of electricity consumption. Refrigerators account for aprox. 50% of the 26.7% of electricity use of kitchen appliances. Thus, all these end-uses totally account for 53% aprox. of electricity use in households.
