A crash course in changing the world.

Thinking and writing about a food crisis which is happening locally makes me gloomy. Where some have far too little food and water others have plenty (e.g. too much). We in our western world are even consuming so much that it is now causing major health problems like heart failure, obesitas, diabetes, etc.

One person who tried to tackle the problem at its core is Jamie Oliver. I know he is more or less a celebrity and therefore has the means and resources but the spirit and energy he puts in his work is amazing and a real inspiration to me.

Here is a link to his website, where he shows one of his programs trying to get the British kids to eat healthier. When you find the time, please watch one of his shows, especially when you live in a Western country. Even though I live in the Netherlands, I believe we are also facing the same problems. Around 50% of the adults is too heavy and 1/3 of all the kids should eat less and exercise more.

I would therefore like to propose the following:
- Teach kids about food and how to prepare it (cooking is essential!)
- Show them the pleasure of living an active life (sports really enhance my mental strength)
- Learn them to have discipline, not only to stay in shape but also to show them that with the right mental model you can achieve anything (success doesn't come easy but takes a lot of effort; there is no quick fix!)

Thanks or sharing - did you see the TV programme that tracked his progress? I think one little story hit the national news - this demented group of mothers brought up a load of fish and chips from the local chippie and fed their children through the fence!
Honestly....being a parent myself - you have to blame these parents! Most are completely tragic - you should have to pass some social responsibility questionaire before you have sex without contraeption! LOL, -Joke - before everyone trolls me on social engineering while quoting Rene Rousseaux! :o)
As an aside, I was flicking through the TV channels the other day and landed on a programme, I think it was called 'feeders' where the programme claimed that many people 'fed' their children as a reward, and the reward was diven by guilt from the parent about not providing other essential care, like playing with them, and also, just basic - well done, have some sweets as a reward (this is actually done by our local primary school - luckily, my daughter doesn't like haribo - however, and quite interestingly, she eats loads of caramel shortbreads, but her waist and bodyfat is slighly under the average - she burns it all off when she argues with me about tidying her room! LOL
Anyway - back to Ms Serious, your childraising proposal is very sensible! :o) and Jamie is enthusiastic in the extreme about his aims, so good one for highlighting him as well.

I've seen the reaction of the parents, it is really amazing because we can even argue that they probably did it because they though they were handling their kids best interest. Therefore the education about food might also be needed for the parents, but most of all I think that they will need to learn how to deal with their kids, for example to use other things than candy to take control.

Be glad that your kid doens't like the Haribo, I find it insane that teachers use that as a motivator nowadays. What happened with the stickers?

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
