Thinking and writing about a food crisis which is happening locally makes me gloomy. Where some have far too little food and water others have plenty (e.g. too much). We in our western world are even consuming so much that it is now causing major health problems like heart failure, obesitas, diabetes, etc.
One person who tried to tackle the problem at its core is Jamie Oliver. I know he is more or less a celebrity and therefore has the means and resources but the spirit and energy he puts in his work is amazing and a real inspiration to me.
Here is a
link to his website, where he shows one of his programs trying to get the British kids to eat healthier. When you find the time, please watch one of his shows, especially when
you live in a Western country. Even though I live in the Netherlands, I believe we are also facing the same problems. Around 50% of the adults is too heavy and 1/3 of all the kids should eat less and exercise more.
I would therefore like to propose the following:
- Teach kids about food and how to prepare it (cooking is essential!)
- Show them the pleasure of living an active life (sports really enhance my mental strength)
- Learn them to have discipline, not only to stay in shape but also to show them that with the right mental model you can achieve anything (success doesn't come easy but takes a lot of effort; there is no quick fix!)
