In 2020 I will be 31. Good gravy that's a scary thought. What will I be doing when I am 31, ie. when I am supposed to be sorted with life and making some kind of positive contribution to the world? I suppose in an ideal world I will be living very simply on the coast somewhere with a delicate marine infrastructure (so most places really). I say this because I want to be there to help with it.
I spent a very short while in 2008 involved in cleaning up a reef in Thailand where I had been diving on a regular basis, and the experience was very illuminating. The impact of people on the surroundings was terrifying. Even in a place where there are no large boats, where everyone is well aware of the delicacy of the underwater flora and fauna, there was one hell of a mess on the sea bed. What really impressed upon me though, was the ease with which some of it could be remedied. In the space of one day we had dragged up skips and skips full of plastic. It might only be small, but I'd love to find myself able to do that
every day.
The more difficult part of the problem is overfishing and dynamite fishing. I have been told I have the gift of the gab. I like to think I could put that to good use educating people about how to fish responsibly and still make a living and how to set up more sustainable sources of food.
I don't know how urgent this problem is in comparison to some of the others that will be dealt with by members of EVOKE. But I do know that it's something I could actually manage, even all on my own.
