in the natural world, there are trades and give-and-take. early bartering systems were similar to this. however, our current money system has no basis in anything useful; indeed, now it has no real basis at all. it is based on a market that keeps FAILING because it is irrational and based on nothing but greed.

@nomadHAR I'm curious about this - do any other species besides humans actually trade? I don't know, and am seeking answers and examples.
I have had animals bring me presents (dead mice a fav of my cat) But I have never observed a non-human creature that has engaged in trade - I'll give you some of this, if you give me some of that.
If it is true that only humans engage in trade, then when, how, why did this begin?
And is it really working?

I can´t recall any other animal except from humans trading. Yet ecosystems are a constant interchange of energy and in such a way one specie can "trade" with another. That happens in symbiosis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbiosis), specifically in mutualism where both species get benefits from each other.
I don´t have any references to support this, but I think that by taking advantage of any "free" energy in an ecosistem (finding their own ecological niche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecological_niche) and as usually population in animals/plants depends strongly on available resources they manage to get a very efficient use of all the resources.
Maybe economy can learn something from there (it some ways it does already, I wonder if we can learn more!)

@Savel Cortes: ideas such as symbiosis and mutualism are exactly what i was trying to say. i also like the idea of ecological niche in society as well; it has been twisted by humans into controlling access to resources with a focus on profit instead of benefit.

I am a great advocate of modeling systems design after nature.
I like these concepts - symbiosis, mutualism, the ecological niche. How are we symbiotic with other natural systems? How are we symbiotic with each other? Is a monetary system the best way to monitor, value and track this symbiosis? If not what are our alternatives?
I don't have any firm answers - only many questions, however I have a deep instinctual sensing that simply inventing another currency, another monetary system, another product/service/technology, another form of trade is not the answer to solving the destruction of ecosystems, the human suffering that result from our badly skewed economies.
Possibly, the answer lies in abandoning valuing, measuring, exchanging of currencies - entirely. Perhaps we might find answers by examining how the rest of nature interrelates in order to obtain it's sustenance without banks, currency,markets, payments and receipts. This flies in the face of human convention however, and seems so overwhelmingly unattainable.

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal.
