I've been really inspired by the work of Riko Kamachi (
http://www.urgentevoke.com/profile/RikoKamachi) in taking the initiative founding and leading the EVOKE team at Kiva. For those who have not yet heard of them, Kiva is an outstanding organization using microloans to finance entrepreneurs throughout the developing world. It's a group that does a lot of good, and the EVOKE @ Kiva team really seems to have gotten people even more excited about lending a helping hand.
That's why I've decided to follow Riko's example and start an EVOKE team at Vittana,
http://www.vittana.org. Vittana is very similar to Kiva in many ways, only they rely on microloans to fund student loans in the developing world. Much of the developing world lacks any kind of infrastructure for student lending. There are no government programs to help students pay for higher education, and they lack banks or other financial institutions willing to offer student loans. As a consequence, higher education remains accessible only to the wealthy, regardless of interest or aptitude. Vittana is doing something to help change that, giving aspiring students a way to afford their education.
If you are interested in helping students in the developing world get the education they deserve, please consider joining the EVOKE @ Vittana team and making a loan. I know that if this takes off the way EVOKE @ Kiva has, we can really make a difference.
