Bamboo bikes
As my heroes I picked the guys behind the Bamboo Bike Project. Their names are John Mutter, David Ho, Sean Murray, Marty Odlin and Justin Aguinaldo and their firm is based in Colombia University.
The project means to make cheaper high quality bikes for people in the poorer regions of Africa, with main focus on Ghana. The bicycle is one of the primary means of transportation in big parts of Africa, so the creation of a cheap and safe bike well adapted to the terrain would mean a lot for many people.

It is basically just the frame that is actually made out of bamboo. The non-bamboo parts are shipped in from India and China. Since just the parts are way smaller than complete bikes you can ship parts for about four times as many bikes as you would be able to ship actual bikes. This makes the price cheaper and is more environmentally friendly.
The plan is that they are gonna get mass produced when the project is finished. This is a direct quote from David Ho: "Almost from the beginning, we at the Bamboo Bike Project realized that in order to work on a scale that matters (i.e., large)."
And I doubt that there is a cheap bicycle in a junkyard available for every person in need of a better way of transportation in for example Ghana.
