Secrets of Social Innovation
All secrets have merit and it is difficult to think in single secrets, as a solid sustainable solution can only come through the implementation of many secrets working together to create a result bigger than the summation of the parts.
My favorite secret is "provide skills, not just finished technologies". Coming from a developing nation that has been innundated with aid and support, it has become second nature to be blinded by the number of white elephants that aid has created. the old adage that if you want to feed someone for one day give him a fish but if you want to feed him forever teach him to fish, is the basis for my opinion. In Africa and all the world, people in need require not only immediate actions but also sustainable actions in which they are partners in. Without making recepients participants, then aid becomes a reason for complacency as opposed to support.
The best way to support towards sustainability is to ensure people become the drivers and not only the owners of their problems but also the owners of their solutions
