Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

=====Breaking News======

 There are now 8 teacher projects, and we're starting to make tracks. Come sign up for one -- see the wiki for details!

=====================

There have been many posts in other threads about getting a group of teachers together here on EVOKE. I'd like to pull us together. Here's my suggestion:

1. In this thread, post who you are and what you teach -- or, if you're a teacher-type but not actually a teacher, like me, tell us what you do. Tell us also where you're from!

2. Check out the google doc that happyseaurcin started -- it has ideas about how to engage teachers in EVOKE.

3. Take a look at the wiki (http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/) and visit the Calling All Teachers page. Add your name (and a link back to your EVOKE profile, if you like) if you'd like to collaborate. If you have an idea for a project, add it to the brainstorming section.

Let's see if we can get traction over the next couple of weeks and maybe pick an idea or two to develop more fully!

** Posted in grateful acknowledgment of everyone who added comments to the collaboration page, with hopes that this thread makes it easier for us to find each other. **

Wow, thanks! *blush* The best way to help right now is to spread the word. I have been reaching out to teachers one by one, as I did with you, but I also have a day job! (I save the world there too... ;-) So, let people know about the thread, the wiki, and Happyseaurchin's google doc, and let's get some people excited about working on teacher projects!

I love it! I'm giving you +100 Spark PowerPoints for driving this teachers group forwards Ninmah. I'm really excited about the potential of this. I'd love to see school kids all over the world collaborating on problems together. How can this group facilitate this?

Keep up the great work.

Awesome. I was just at CUE, and spoke on Game Design in the classroom, ending with showing urgent evoke. Moments ago my middle school brand new lunch club, Dragons Evoke, began playing together. We'll have a dozen wonderful young people and a few teachers taking part together.

Thank you.

My EVOKE name is Ninmah, my RL name is Rachel Smith. I'm a former teacher who now researches emerging technologies for teaching and learning. I have a deep love of games and hope to work on projects that bring more games into classrooms. I'm from California in the US.
Jeff, that's fantastic! Are your students taking part in the online EVOKE, or creating a parallel one of their own? Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. If they're here, I'd be glad to follow their posts, leave some comments, and see how the process unfolds for them.
Great work Agent Brain (that has to be my favourite EVOKE Agent name so far by the way). I'm giving you +50 knowledge share for your initiative.

I am not a teacher but I am an instructional designer. I design courses for corporate, government and nonprofit clients. I would be happy to help develop ideas for this!
Hello all,

I just finished my masters of science in secondary education with a concentration in social studies. I am currently looking for employment as a teacher in the New York State region. I am from Albany, New York. I think this is a great idea Ninmah.
Hi Deborah and John -- thanks for joining in! If you haven't already, please add to the wiki page (the wiki is at http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/ - then go to the Calling All Teachers project page) with any ideas you have, or just to show support for ideas there you like. Also take a look at happyseaurchin's google doc (https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AfJ0U5QmxNOdZGY4Nms4djhfNjFnaHQ4...) and add to that if you wish. Glad to have you both on board!

We're still in the idea-gathering phase, but soon we'll hopefully be forming teams to work on some of the ideas people come up with.
I am not a teacher currently but in grad school in Technology, Innovation and Education and working on an open source project for K12 and USB based computing. I'd like to join!
Hi Caroline, and welcome! You don't have to be a teacher, and I'm glad you're interested! The group we are building includes lots of people, like me, who are not teachers but who want to actively support EVOKE teachers doing projects. Take a look at the wiki and the google doc, if you haven't already, and add to the list of projects we're brainstorming -- or put your name by one you'd like to help with -- or both. Glad to see you here!
Hello Agents,

Evoke call sign - Valorin, RL - Kevin DiVico. While I am not a teacher currently (I did some trianing and teaching during my military service) I am a entrepreneur who recently was working in Second Life exploring using that platform as a means to teach.

Ninmah - thanks for letting me know about all your doing and inviting me to post.

I have long known that through game s and play humans learn best. I applaud the research that Jane McGonigal has done and is doing (Evoke is after all a project in and unto itself beside a game). I believe that effective virtual lesson plans that teach through play can and will be developed.

Right now, I am pursuing my passion which is resilient communities (permaculture), world changing and life empowerment. I am working on a Social Entrepreneurship endeavor that focus on those things.

Are any of the rest of you familiar with virtual worlds- I think a Second Life evoke install that acted as a learning center for people of the work we are doing would be a great idea. What do you agents think ?
Hi Kevin, and thanks for adding your voice to the mix. I'm Ninmah in Second Life, too (Ninmah Ash). A learning center in Second Life would be a great place for conversations, simulations, resources... Would you like to head up this effort? Or just help? Either way, if you haven't already, list it on the teacher wiki page and let's see who else might be interested in working on that. Great idea!
Hello everyone,

I am not a teacher, but I have an idea. For now I am calling it Conduit. The idea is to establish a network of teachers across the globe who will then connect their classrooms through teleconferencing equipment. The purposes vary - from changing the way language is taught in the US, to non-linguistic games that can be played with children who do not speak the same language, to providing technology to places that cannot afford it.

I'm going to be adding a thread and more posts about this, but I thought this would be a good place to feel out some preliminary interest.

I am going to need game designers, local experts, and technology buffs, but teachers and education experts who are willing to get involved will be the base and the most important part of getting this going.

I really feel like this could do some serious good. Ignorance is one of the major things we battle with EVOKE, and apathy is perhaps worse. By seeing and interacting with people across the world we create a connection. When that country appears on the news, it will not be faceless.

Anyway, let me know if this is the kind of thing the EVOKE teachers would like to pursue. Keep with the awesome.

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.

Where I will be in ten years.

Ten years from now I will be in a political job assisting with people in the midlands of South Carolina particularly the rural working class and farmers. As the class of people that feed the nation I find that it is imperative that we assist with making sure they produce as much food as possible. I would like to support local scientists as well that are leading in research on how to produce food more efficiently. I will also be participating in missions to foreign countries to help people with…See More

India Water home

The secret was living on the water via boats common in many developing countries like Myanmar. This is a real Indian boat home made of wood and this provides a shelter for many peoples around the world.
