Who has the most creative idea for solving the
water crisis?

Meet Ned Breslin, the CEO of Water for People. He's helping local communities in Malawi get the clean water they need in a truly innovative way: with a special merry-go-round called a PlayPump.

How does the PlayPump work? Ned explains:

"While children have fun spinning on the PlayPump merry-go-round, clean water is pumped from underground into a 2,500-liter tank, standing seven meters above the ground.

A simple tap makes it easy for adults and children to draw water. Excess water is diverted from the storage tank back down into the boreh***.

The water storage tank provides a rare opportunity to advertise in outlaying communities. All four sides of the tank are leased as billboards, with two sides for consumer advertising and the other two sides for health and educational messages. The revenue generated by this unique model pays for pump maintenance."

There are many more projects like the PlayPump. Your LEARN mission this week is to discover at least one of them.

Who else has a truly creative idea for solving the water crisis? Find a great, big idea and share it with the EVOKE network.

I like the Lifesaver bottle. It filters out the bad things such as dirt and it purifys water. This Is great pecause less people will become ill because of polluted or gross drinking water.

I love the merry-go-round idea. It lets kids have fun and help their community at the same time. I remember when I was little and I saw a merry-go-round, I would immeaditly go jump on. Imagine how happy a little kid in Africa would be to be able to play on one. I also like the LifeStraw idea becauses it filters out most of the bad contamination.

This invention is very cute. It can be placed close to home and is easy to use. No longer do families have to travel far from home and bring back heavy containers. If kids have to come they dont need to do much work to pump the water. Now the people can be ssure the water is clean.

This is an excellent invention! Kids can have fun and help their village at the same time. Then they can learn how to make an impact on the world and help create ways to get the world aware of some of the natural crises we're going through and ways to stop them.
I also like the Water for People organization. This is a great way to help people who don't really have access to clean water and help them keep it. Also it's a great way to come up with better ideas of how to keep our water cleaner.

There is a mother living in Bangladesh. She walks 40 minutes every day a couple times to supply her family with water- in which the water was contaminated. They used to get many diseases like diarrhea. But now, there is a new deep tube well that brings her clean water. New inventions and innovations are great, but a well known well might have just saved their lives.

I love this invention! Its very creative how they don't have to work extremely hard to get clean water. This means that less time will be spent walking long distances to find clean water and carry it back.. and its not usually clean! This will provide an opportunity for children that would be carrying water to get an education.

I think that Ned's idea is really smart. while kids have fun, peop[le can have access to clean water. I think That this is a really good idea because this shows us that clean water is really inportant. Some people take fresh water for granted. There is a limited amount of fresh water in the world, annd we may run out of it at some time. We can turn saltwater into fresh water, but this process can take time and lots of money. This is why I think that Ned's idea is really smart and cool.

Comment by Christian Sutton on October 30, 2012 at 9:58pm

I like the Water 1st Intenational project the best because it gives fresh water to people that have a lack of it. It has donations, people involving, and new inventions to bring fresh water.

Comment by Harris Cohen on October 30, 2012 at 12:46am

I learned about this invention last year. I thought it was he most creative and fun wa to get clean water. While I was learning about the playpump, I also came across another way to creat clean water. You can use bannana peals to create clean water. The banana peels contain nitrogen, sulfur, and carboxylic acids, which bind with positively-charged heavy metals often leached into water from mining or industrial runoff. This method can be used up to eleven times!

Comment by Julia Sherrill on October 29, 2012 at 9:56pm

A cool invention for clean water is the LifeStraw. The LifeStraw filters out dirt, germs, bacteria and parasites but does not filter out chemicals, salt, or pollutants sadly. Still, the LifeStraw fights off illnesses and infections.

Informing about water crisis and some ideas to solve this problem I discovered the proposal of Ramon Hansmeyer. He developed a business concept called 'drinking water for Colombia'.
He travelled to Colombia to get to know country and its people. Here Ramon saw, that especially many small villages, have a planty of water supply. But the problem is that mostly rainwater, groundwater or river water is collected. On this account its unsuitable for drinking. Nevertheless this water is drunk because of the shortage of alternatives and financial reasons. This has disastrous consequences for the health of people who live in such kind of areas in the world.
The basic idea is based on a
nano-water filtering system which has been designed for disaster situations. So Ramon found out that this filtering system isnt larger than a conventional 2-litre PET bottle which is able to convert up to 6000 litre process water into drinking water.
With this concept the young man wants to achieve ambitious aims:

  1. reduction of poverty in the countryside
improvement of the water supply for the rural population
economically sustainable business model with profit opportunities

This aims could be a way to live without long-term donations and is even a start to help themselves.
I found particularly interesting that Ramon wants to support mainly single mothers who are offered a perspective as water sellers.
In Colombia its a frequent practice to sell call minutes in the streets (seller = 'Minutos'). According to this principle Ramon plans to spread the 'Litros'. As a consequence women (especially young mothers) would be able to securing a livehood and moreover to assure the drinking water supply of their village.

In Denmark a lot of water-bottel-brands are doing campains where they donate some money for water projects. Aquador did one resently.
For three months, two of Denmark's most famous models - Louise P and Christian Hald - helped the Danish Red Cross Society to focus on the global shortage of clean drinking water. The campaign to raise money for clean drinking water has just been completed and the Danish Red Cross has received almost 1.4 million dollars for water projects in Africa.

A danish water-bottle-brand called "Kildevæld" has this campain, that for every bottle you buy, they donate a "LifeStraw" to somewhere in Africa.
A "LifeStraw" filtrates the dirty water, so it is possible to drink the water

I think the involvement of the government is necessary... looking into Singapore Water Management is a good insight, and so is the Australian Water Marketing.. All telling how to save Water. Apart from this what Adam Eivy pointed out is also interesting.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
