amid the destruction, things like faith still hold a place. Faith can be shaken taken to be what you want to interpret into it. It can be re-arranged and disorganized, but in the end, it will survive all attempts to destroy it. It can be both the cause of great sorrow, and the saver of millions..... how you look at it, is everyone's personal opinion.

Makes me think of all the aid we give to disaster relief efforts and developing nations. Then I wonder what are the characteristics that make someone more suited to work away form home, compared to people who can make significant changes in their home communities. No city/town in the US is completely self-reliant or sustainable. I think its equally important to improve your own community, as to improve others.

@James: Well, Katrina showed us some embarassing facts about the USA. Surely, one should be able to both look outwards, as well as develop your own country.

I haven't been in the US more than twice, and then was only in the big cities of NYC / SF - I haven't seen the poverty of some of the poorer areas in the country.

Without a doubt, Americans need to do more to alleviate the poverty at home. But that should not, in my opinion, mean that the work in foreign countries is to be down-prioritized.

But you are right, sometimes people who want to go 'somewhere exotic' and do good would be a more effective agent of change if they stayed at home and worked with their own community there.

I wonder if the icon was fixed before the trauma (in purposely ambiguous language)...

There's a lot of work to do.

It makes me think of a loss of faith and hope.. not sure why - I think the notion that a religious icon now seems to be damaged and no longer as "useful" as it once was.

how things fall apart
or are smashed to pieces...
perhaps even our ideals

The juxtaposition of hope amid chaos is striking. regardless of your belief system or lack of one, the art , created by human hands has survived the chaos that swept this room, it is damaged but it is not destroyed. It more then survives, it shines and radiates with that indefinable essence of the human experience... hope.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
