Helping with sustainable food

I actually have a number of neighbors with who I help grow fruits and veggies. We have in previous years taken these produce into the town and contribute it to the food drive in town that delivers to the needy. Many of the individuals at the food drive say the watermelon and cuc**bers I grew went to good use. We are thinking of making a pool land where everyone contributes to farming, seeds, tending their section of crop and can take as much as they need for themselves but they should…

Chris Cano of Gainesville Compost

For this mission, I used my journalistic talents to interview Chris Cano of Gainesville Compost earlier in the semester. I've been trying to get the article published in The Alligator or The Gainesville Sun and will continue to do so, but for now, here's the draft:

Chris Cano doesn’t see leftover food as trash, but instead, an opportunity for growth.

The 24-year-old UF graduate has spent the last seven months collecting food leftovers from local restaurants and turning it into…

Increasing the food security of others

While it wasn't a wh*** lot, I worked with my supervisor from work to set-up a food drive that collected staples to donate to the local catholic food bank. We used the suggestions they post on their website to collect their food and then pre-packaged the boxes before delivery in order to save the food bank's time and resources. In total, we collected about 150 pounds of food. While it's not going to last forever, spring is traditionally a time that food bank's struggle, and we were trying to…

Volunteering at Catholic Charities

While in another team for a different class, I volunteered at a charity center for young children. While it is only one meal at a time, the charity packs backpacks with food and snack for the kids in public schools who may be suffering from hunger. The backpacks are given out to the students on fridays and collected on the following friday. A fresh backpack is given out while the old is collected and the process repeats each week.

Act - Food Security

At my college, the University of Florida, there is a course named "Plants and People" that my roommate took last semester. Each class period, he brought home plants in which he took care of. I helped him out by watering and taking care of these plants when he couldn't take care of them. Even though these plants will not help solve hunger, the idea that anyone can take care of plants that could feed others is a big deal. With education of agriculture, the world can have more food to share…

Horticulture

I went to class with a friend of mine who is a horticulture minor. She is in a class called Introduction to Ecosystem Restoration. The class visit taught me a lot about what I can do in my community to improve and restore my ecosystem.

ACT2

Today after work I saved the food that we were going to put in the trash. This food was perfectly fine and could be eaten on the same day still. What I did was take it to the homeless shelter and they really enjoyed it.

Food Help

Every year, my school does a food drive in both the fall and spring. This year I donated 25 cans of soup. It felt great to help out the community, not because I expected something in return, but just because I knew people needed it and I was doing the right thing

ACT 2 - Increasing Someone's Food Security

Currently I live in downtown Gainesville Florida. There are probably at least 50 homeless people that sleep at the main park near my apartment every night. Giving money to people who are homeless is a touchy subject because you never know where that money will be going. While at Publix, I saw peanut butter and jelly were buy one get one free. My roommates and I made as many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as we could with what we bought and handed them out to the homeless people…

ACT 2

A few weeks ago I actually did my speech in my public speaking class about making a home garden. I explained the importance of food security for the coming years and we did a hands on activity where the class got to plant their own basil seeds to start their home garden. I encouraged them to go home and use the knowledge that I provided and their new seedling to start their own garden and to show their friends. It was a great experience to see the excitement of the students who had grown…

Food Security

Ever since I was little my family has been donating canned goods to various organizations. Every fall we buy mass amounts of thanksgiving canned goods to help provide families with everything they need to have a thanksgiving feast of their own, without having to go to Metropolitan Ministries or a shelter.

Feeding America

I organized a philanthropy with my fraternity that worked to raise money and food for a local food bank. It is an annual event that benefits Feeding America, an organization that works to eradicate food insecurities in America. This past event, we collected over 300 pounds of food and raised over $500. http://www.urgentevoke.com/photo/food-bank?context=user

Gardening UF!

My big in my fraternity is in a course titled, "Plants and People." The design of the course is to teach people about gardening and then encourage others by giving them plants and assignments to get involved with the process itself. I attended his class one day since guests are encouraged to join to spread the knowledge and took home two plants to maintain and keep up. While the two plants I had were not food, they often have tomato plants and things of the like that I help out my friend…

Food Security ACT2

I have personally increased food security for someone in my life by cooking a well-balanced dinner for my roommates when they would have ordered fast food otherwise. Also, the sorority that I am a member of often donates to local canned food drives. I donate non-perishable items such as canned vegetables and healthy soups whenever I can. I strive not only to donate to those in need but to also donate healthy food.

Mission 2

In order to increase food security for someone around me there are numerous steps I can take. Earlier this week, I took one of my friends to dinner at Zoe's Kitchen. I paid for her meal and we both enjoyed a delicious, healthy dinner. One of the most important things I've learned during this mission about food security is that it's not only important for people to have access to food, but access to healthy food. It does no good to eat 3 meals a day if they are filled with artificial…

Food Security in Alachua

One significant aspect of food security is the assuring the safety of commercialized and refined food products, particularly Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's). In the United States, produce companies are not required to label GMO's accordingly however it is estimated that 75% of corn and 85% of our soybean crop is genetically modified.

Recently local groups organized for a protest against the largest GMO's producer in the world, Monsanto. I participated in the protest where many…

Food Security Around Me

I will make a very deliberate effort to buy two less starbucks drinks a week and donate the money that I would have spent on chai tea lattes to help out a local homeless shelter - that will probably be meals for one person for a week!

Starting a Home Garden

I helped my friend start a home garden. We are growing multiple vegetables and herbs. He was extremely pleased with it and has decided to help one of his friends start a home garden as well.

Act 2 - Helping a friend with their food security

My roommate is graduating in a few months and entering the "real world". She has never really had to cook for herself. I have seen first-hand the way she survives off of sandwiches and Publix baked goods. Her current diet is unhealthy and could cause negative health results for her in the future.

Also, when she moves out, she will be living on her own, which means her parents and I won't be there to cook for her or help her with recipes. So, for my "act", I taught her an easy chicken…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
