The Women's Episode

It is useful in these episodes to look for words in the dialogue balloons that are in bold type. A Google search on those words or terms can show up some interesting threads that you may find useful in putting together your own ideas.

Meyer Anselm, Ezra Pound and a bit of History

There are very few poets who can match Ezra Pound in that field. As in any art the artist should be judged for their craft within the space of their work and the times in which they lived. It is a fact that the nature of the space changes with time so that the famous, or ignored, of one era are the forgotten, or the acclaimed, of another but so what? None of that changes my opinion that in his space and time as a social, economic and political commentator he was as bad as they come.… Continue

Desalination, Veolia, the World Bank and Water Issues

Agent Mullman posted a blog about a desalination project in Australia. Part of that blog mentioned that the project is run by a French company named Veolia. For the blog see

This company is amazingly large in its international scope. A random sample of the almost 2 million hits… Continue

Resilient Strategies

The fist bit of dialogue on the first page of the Cuban episode called for resilient strategies to be a part of the solution to the problem posed.

Resilient strategy is a term from current business planning and practices. It appears to be nearly synonymous with the concept of the triple bottom line. There is one company that has used thesea idea to build a consulting presence in the business world. Their website has explanations. See …

The Zambesi River and The International Crane Foundation

A few miles away from where I live is The International Crane

Foundation which is dedicated to the idea of establishing self-sustaining

populations of all the crane species in the world. One of their

underlying ideas is that to carry out their mission the entire

community surrounding each required bird environment must be brought

into the project. One result is that sustainability is achieved for

many other things under the cover of the highly visible… Continue

Calvin deWitt

Agents have talked about spiritual values in dealing with the many issues raised by the EVOKE challenge and I think have shied away from explicit theology.

For an outright theological view I recommend the work of Calvin deWitt. Rather than explain any of it, it is simpler to direct you to his writings. I think he has had a very important influence on achieving goals shared by many here. He spoke in a course my colleague and I constructed some years ago on many of the same water issues… Continue

Thames Floods

The story line of the UK government and the City of London being taken unaware and unprepared by floods is simply not creditable. See

Ch***ra: Home treatment (Corrected)

( Correction: Below it says four-finger pinch of salt. My original said three. I think four is the correct way but if you practice with the more detailed instructions from the URL, you should be able to work out a calibration scheme for your own hands. )

Homebrew Electricity

A new part of the EVOKE story will be here very soon. Before we concentrate on that I wanted to add something to the home brewed electrical power material.

A recent post showed a pie chart with various formulas connecting voltage, current and power through the idea of resistance. Resistance is measured in a unit called the ohm and a number of web sites with similar displays can be found with a search for Ohm's Law. The one I did is …

First - A World of Musicians

First, a world of musicians. Then a world of gardeners. Then ....? Maybe we end up with a world of innovators.

Music may be the easiest way to demonstrate the value of an utterly inclusive approach to any goal.

For an active example of this idea in action see

This is one result of a nation wide systematic approach to the idea of universal participation in… Continue

April Issue - Scientific American

The April 2010 issue of Scientific American has some material directly applicable to many of the threads Agents are following.

See: http://www.scientificamerican.com/sciammag/ ; for the table of contents. Note the news article on making bio diesel directly from cellulose material with an engineered version of the e. coli bacterium.

One thing to note in this last article is the reference to using an "Asian grass".… Continue

Citizen X is Real

Citizen X is a real organization although it operates under different names. The one that appears to come closest to what has been described so far for EVOKE in terms of getting and broadcasting government doc**ents is the wikileaks group. See http://wikileaks.org/

Windmills: Dnyamos, Alternators and Generators

Eureka mentioned two things on the first page right at the start of Episode 3. One was William Kamkwamba and the other was that all you need to build a windmill is a "simple dynamo". For me Mr. Kamkwamba's flash of insight and inspiration was not that dynamos are simple but that all the stuff around him that he and the rest of his community saw everyday could take on a new life as a windmill powered generator. Seeing the un-obvious potential in the obviously ordinary is a…

EVOKE: The Meaning

One of the side challenges from Alchemy was to figure out what EVOKE means.

It could be a code word of some sort standing for something else but that seems unlikely. The ordinary dictionary meaning of the word fits the story very well. If EVOKE is an acronym then the expectation is that each letter has some meaning significant to the usage of the acronym and encapsulated in a word beginning with that letter.

It might not be any sort of code or puzzle at all in that… Continue

Discontinuity (Corrected)

We jumped, and that is the correct word, from the team just arriving in Tokyo to Tokyo fixed and we did not pass GO and we did not collect our two hundred dollars. For those not familiar with old style American games from before the computer era, the phrase is from the game Monopoly. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly_%28game%29 ).

In short the basic tool that Eureka the tool agent packed was either magic… Continue

Table Stakes

In my time zone it is not yet March 10 so I do not know anything about what Alchemy is going to present for the next steps. I like to predict things and deconstruct all kinds of situations to try to understand the underlying interweaving of interests and forces. I also want to be ahead of whatever is posted. Call it a character flaw if you wish. If you look at my profile page you will see that I do local politics as an elected official and deconstruction and modeling are… Continue

Tokyo Tool Kit - Part IV

The Mission is to deal with an impending famine in the major cities of Japan. It is not clear to me if this involves the rest of the country or just the cities. Given the right conditions the growing regions would attempt to block shipments to the urban centers. If there are supplies in the country but resistance to sharing, then a reluctance of any government to use force is understandable although force has been used during famines in the past. That situation would be very different from… Continue

Tokyo Tool KIt - Part III

I keep looking back at the trailer for hints and I’ve picked up one more but it leads to questions more than anything else. On page 4 of the trailer, the tool specialist says that she will leave for Tokyo in an hour rather than immediately because she has to pack some tools. The crisis is in an industrialized city in a fully industrialized country – just what does she need to pack that would not be provided to her by the Tokyo Governor’s…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
