EVOKE - How and Why

EVOKE consists of socially innovative agents that learn, act and imagine various challenges the world face today and in the future. By knowing what challenges are out there, we as agents, can do something about the challenges. Combating crime, corruption, poverty, environmental challenges and ethical dilemmas are EVOKE agents daily challenges.

EVOKE is not only about ideas, it is about putting those ideas into action locally and internationally. As a management student,…

Future of EVOKE..lets make it happen.

The name EVOKE, is the name it should stand for. In this first season it has evoked us to not only learn new things, but to act and imagine. I personally think acting is the most important part of EVOKE and would want that to continue into the second season. If we can act and inspire other people to act we could easily change the world. If I had to give any recommendations to the EVOKE team it would be:

- Continuous focus in evoking agents to ACT. To get out there and…

Website Forum - Relief Effort 2011

If there were to be an outbreak of flu in South Africa I would think strategically in terms of location. I would try to get hold of people in each province/state which are nine in total. Specifically I would target relief agencies and make contact.

I will invite them to my "NO DARK" website http://blackstarz.rucus.net/andrew/ and open a forum to discuss issues. Issues specifically relating to the province/state can be…

The "NO DARK" Website

Here is the website that I have formed. It updates people in real time on the situations around the world. The site will be connected to major news agents and relief agencies to provide up to date accurate information.

Here is the link to the site:

Please note that the title and some links are still from the original template. I am…

Reactions to change, including crisis: Psychological Approach

For us to understand how to manage a crisis and change, we need to know from a psychological perspective what we go through once initial change/crisis is experienced. Kubler Ross has performed studies on this and explain the phases of change and how to…

100 years old ... experience is key

At 100 years old I would like to picture having solved all the environmental and social problems of the world. Animals are coming out of extinction, the environment is blooming and water is plentiful. Diseases have cures and the world seems like a better place to live in. My advice to the youth at 100 will be to conserve what we have built up. Protect it like none other. As soon as we harm our environment we harm ourselves indirectly.

I will encourage the youth to formulate…

Box of photos and instructions

In communities I think having information on how to grow food for the family is vitally important. To make sure this vital information is not lost I would have a box of photos of how plants should be planted in the community a long with how they should be cared for and grown. Instructions with the photographs will be added to make sure that the younger generations know how to cultivate the produce and even prepared the produce for cooking. All this information can only be gained by experience… Continue

The Green Pharmacy - Make one in your community.

In Indonesia a new "Green Pharmacy" idea has transformed the way in which the community operates and lives. The village of Wedomartani lies 30 kilometers north of Yogyakarta, on the island of Java, Indonesia. With an area of 1,244 hectares which has 15,535 inhabitants. The soil in Wedomartani was dry, dusty, and sandy. It was not suitable for agricultural purposes. Only 10% of the land was appropriate for rice fields and yet 90% of Wedomartani’s population work as agriculturists. 10% of this… Continue

Grahamstown Relief Zones and Stations

In my map I have come up with relief zones to be managed by specific assigned stations. The stations as seen on the map will be on a main road entering and exiting the city from different directions so if the need for evacuation it can be done effectively. There will be a view point on the highest point overlooking the city to monitor the town.

There will be 3 zones. CBD(Central Business District) Zone, the Urban area Zone and the Township Zone. Each having their respective…

Relief Agency in South Africa - ADRA

In 2008 my local town, Grahamstown in South Africa had been hit by severe rain storms, washing away homes and leaving people homeless without food. 280 families were affected by the rains. A religious agency called the ADRA which is the Adventist Development and Relief Agency of South Africa.

"ADRA South Africa seeks to provide humanitarian,…

Tagging personal information on maps possibly provided by Google, using Ushahidi in times of trouble..

If I had to pick a crisis as tsunami hitting the coast of South Africa due to a volcanic eruption in the Atlantic, I would be deeply concerned about family members and friends living all along the coast. I could use Ushahidi to try and track vital information that could possibly save friends and family members living there.

I think maybe inviting Google to the picture could help tremendously. Updates from Google Maps in the time of crisis could help not only the rescuers,…

HIV/AIDS no longer a problem in 2020

If there is one thing I could wish for especially since this problem is very close to home here in South Africa, it would be the abolishment of HIV/AIDS in our society. I would imagine that women no longer live in fear for their lives and their family lives in terms of HIV/AIDS. Hopefully a cure for the devastating disease would be around to help families. More hopefully I hope that prevention measures are in full use and that education about the disease is fully… Continue

Empowering Girl Guides

Recently I helped the Girl Scouts in Kimberley raise funds for the homeless. My parents and sister are heavily involved in empowering young girls to make a change in the world. The Girl Scouts believe that though knowledge and experience, empowerment will arise.

A cake sale was held at the Hospice Health Care Centre in Kimberley. It attracted different types of people to the event where cake and tea were sold to contribute to donation to the homeless and to buying equipment…

Share Trading Experience

This week I decided to finally get onto the stock market and see how I can trade shares. I joined Thebe Securities (www.thebesecurities.co.za) and signed myself up for a share trading account. Once all the FICA laws has been addresses you are ready to trade.

Everything is done electronically. You buy shares in real time (to the second) and sell in real time as well. An invoice for the shared bought is sent to you immediately.…

Money and the future? E- Commerce

It seems that money has evolved dramatically over the past 20 years. With the introduction of new technologies and innovations it has transformed the way we transact. E-Commerce seems to be the way forward at the moment. It is safer to carry a credit card/bank card than carrying hard cash. Cash production will probably decrease as the demand for non-cash transactions increase. Long term, experts seem more scepical. Dylan Sun from suggests the following about e-commerce "… Continue

2020 - Water Day

In 2020 celebrations are underway. Celebrating that water is life and that it vitally important in our everyday life. I hope that in 10 years time there will be water plentiful due to the usage of the ocean to provide sufficient supply.

There is only 1 way to celebrate Water Day in 2020, I would imagine the longest water slide to be built. The innovators and contributors to better water availability would get a chance to slide down the biggest water slide marking the fact…

Government and Desalination making the connection

Since desalination has grown and now formulates a big part in solving the water crisis I would like to see if the local municipality has been connected to desalination plants around the area. A large desalination plant exists very close to Grahamstown http://www.traveladdo.co.za/news-article/105/Largest-desalination-plant-in-South-Africa to find out about it.

I would like…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
