The hunger map of Africa sums the challenge up... and it leads me to think that what is needed is action.

From my perspective food, farming and production may seem a long way from the industry that I work in - community development and the built environment. But of course the two are completely intertwined. I know of a brilliant social entrepreneur in South Africa who has really done, and continues to do, some great work. His name is Taddy Bletcher. He founded CIDA http://www.cida.co.za which is a free university in Jo'burg. Quite something when you think about it. It is an amazing story how it started and has gone on to be extremely successful. To reduce the costs the students help to do the work of running the campus and operations. He has persisted with it… Continue

I love the concept of social innovation... and it is challenging to translate it to the local context in Africa (i have not been there yet). The main thing for me that jumped out of these articles is to listen to the locals. I know a brilliant social entrepreneur in South Africa called Taddy Bletcher... this would be a good starting point.
