I have participated in community gardening since early childhood. My parents and their neighbors share a garden space that is used for each family to grow some food. Each family is responsible for their own space and for tending it appropriately. All the families share vegetables, and donations are often made to a local food pantry that feeds the needy.

I'm planning to start a Ph.D. program this fall in sustainable futures analysis. I hope upon graduating to begin a career advising corporations and world governments on the steps necessary to ensure the best future for the planet. If I were approached to help solve a food crisis in Tokyo, I would have the necessary education and experience.

I am a big fan of David de Rothschild, whose work for the environment is never shadowed by his celebrity persona. He has taken environmentalism to the mainstream and continually strives to better the world around him. I am a follower on Twitter, and you should be too. Thanks for the hard work, @DRexplore.

Understanding this point is essential to solving any economic dilemma. Rather than relying on new capital for the economic development of a place, it can be equally beneficial (as well as more sustainable) to focus on innovations using existing resources and infrastructures. Fostering place-based economies is never a bad idea.
