A crash course in changing the world.
It is the year 2013. A volcano in central Africa has been threatening to erupt and is now considered an actual threat. There is a number of settlements at the base of the volcano which are situated there as the soil in the area is conducive to farming. Your task is to design an effectice escape route for the members of thast settlement where you are required to aclmly explain what the situation is and be readily available for any questions or emergencies. The residents need to…

The evoke network acts as a primary platform for communication. After many years of running we have noticed that those who are unaware and those who have been misinformed are the ones who need our undivided attention where we stand to assist in communicating effective measures from natural disaster evacuation to flu outbreak warnings. The evoke network is here constantly to assist in communication and effective education. We strive to educate those who have not had the…

I feel that in season 2 evoke should focus on crisis management further. I thouroughly enjoyed completing the missions associated with crisis management as I was forced to think critically and logically. In the next season, the ways in which assistance during natural disasters should be looked at. I also think the concept of educating the uneducated and those who cannot afford an education should also be focused on. I think it would be a good way to engage with their community…

The concept I have designed is aimed children in primary school aiming to learn the indigenous knowledge of their area. The object is a long cylindrical tube about 15cms long made of pieces of wood joined together, but able to swivel around in a kind of rubik's cube idea. A picture of the world will be carved on the cylinder. The aim of the object is for the learners to swivel the pieces of wood around aligning each of the continents in an accurate position. Once the…

It is the year 2011 and anothe flu pandemic has reached the area. Firstly, all businesses, schools and other areas where there is a high concentration of people need to be evacuated immediately in order to lower the risk of infection within these small, densely populated areas. Obviously, the best medium of communication in terms of media respones would be via the internet as people do not necessarily need to leave their homes to gain updates. Firstly, I would encourage all…

Out of the 5 secrets of Crisis Communication, the piece of information that I found most important was the idea behind how various sources in a situation view or perceive the various bits of information presented to them in a pandemic. This aspect is challenging as an expert in the field for example needs to ensure that the public, who are not so experienced in the field understand fully the concept that they are being exposed to without any breakdown in…

I have grown up in a time where the environment has spiralled down to an ever astounding low because of the mistreatment of the environment by humans. This resulted in global shortages of food and water. I would like to share aspects of food and water saving techniques that I made use of. Firstly, water shortages is no joke- I have always been used to opening a tap and driinking from the clear cool stream that flowed out. Recently, I have resorted to saving rain water and…

Lake Kariba, one of the largest lakes in Africa is extremely important in terms of aspects such as creating hydro-electric power, fishery forms, water supply and lake transport with focus on fishery management. The local people surrounding Lake Kariba are part-time fishermen where they depend on fishing as an alterntaive source of income with respect to agricultural activities. The case study I have chosen outlines the efforts currently being made to conserve the fish in the…

The project I chose to cover are the learning centres established for women in Herat, Afghanistan. Sadly, women have been discriminated against and deprived of any kind of education under the Taliban regime. So...I think that in ten years time we will have seen the abolishment of the Taliban regime, firstly. This would allow for women to gain higher levels of education and therefore providing them with greater opportunities in the work place. I optimistically think that in ten…

Unfortunately, I was not abe to make any kind of donations this week as time just did not permit...I will however, throughout the rest of the year attempt to raise a certain amount of money, ready to be donated to a women's shelter in Johannseburg that I have visited.
I have however attemtped to make a difference in a young girl's life in terms of her future and education. I assisted my domestic worker's daughter in applying to university.…

The article that immediately grabbed my attention this week was the article entitled "Promoting girls' empowerment through sport in Afghanistan".On International Women's day a women's soccer team was established. I feel that sport, in particular provides an ideal platform for women to exhibit their particular skills and talents in various arenas and this way encouraging women in general as well as heightening their feeligs of self-confidence, an aspects which I see to be of…

I was at home in Johannesburg this week while attempting to complete this week's act mission. After doing a copious amount of research of alternative currencies and the way in which I could implement these alternative currencies into an exchange I felt quite despondent as I could not come up with an innovative act that would actually benefit someone.
After a while I started speaking to our domestic worker about the way she manages her finances and her financial goals. I then…

I think the development of finances and money in the future should head towards empowering people in underprivileged areas with regards to their finances. The people in these areas should be taught how to save their money and should basically be taught the ins and outs of MICROFINANCE. I researched various ways in which finances could change in the future and found that microfinance might be the most effective.
Opportunity International is the organisation I found online. This…

I have decided to follow Paul Searle and the members of Pump Aid who have established what is now called the Elephant Pump. The pump can lift water from as deep as 50m and produce 1 litre of water every second. The Pump Aid team determines where the well will be situated according to analyses of the vegetation of the area as well as the geological aspects of the area.
Wells are dug by hand and Pump Aid teams may help to remove rocks and heavily impacted earth. Pump Aid never uses…
