A crash course in changing the world.

A Secret to Social Innovation. (Learn1)

In the 'study material' for Mission 1 (found here: http://designinafrica.wordpress.com/2008/10/23/innovation-in-africa... ) I chose the following as the 'secret' I could learn the most from:

"What you have matters more than what you lack."

I don't think I am the only one this statement can teach a lot to. Every day you can hear people complain of this. 'If I had a better job I could afford to take that trip' or 'Maybe if I didn't have class I'd have time to volunteer' or 'If I didn't rent maybe I could help homeless animals, but I'm not in any situation to do so.'

Well that last one is me!

It seems when we think about helping others we think on a grander scale, and we think of the things that PREVENT us from doing what we want to do, instead of looking at things we already have that can be used to make a difference NOW, not later.

I want to foster homeless animals and save lives. I can't right now. It will be years before I can get a home of my own and in those years how many lives have been lost because I was waiting for the time to be right? What if I NEVER end up able to buy a home? Will I die regretting what I never was able to do?

I have things available to me right now that can make a difference. I have graphic design skills, and a computer, and an internet connection. I can help with a website or a newsletter to get the word out to people who DO have a home and may be able to foster or adopt a homeless pet.

What do you have, that you can do today?

You are absolutely correct! I sometimes find myself in the same rut and thinking to myself, if I had this I would, could or should. It is about what we have right now that we can offer to help someone else. Even if it is simply by asking a neighbor do they need help with their trash, or picking up something from the grocery store for them. We stop ourselves from being social innovators because we often worry about what we don't have but not what we can give to someone else. Very well thought out and written Crystal.

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
