I am sitting on the fence about who to follow. At this point I will be following this effort.
http://medic.frontlinesms.com/product-tour/ I will following them by bookmarking them and following their blog. I don't facebook and I haven't dived into the Twitter world either. I find the wh*** concept of being able to push information out and even do testing over sms absolutely fascinating.
Having access to information is the key to public health. Especially when it comes to things like infectious disease. Having information on therapeutic options as well as possible quarantine necessities can help stem the flow of outbreaks in malnourished populations.
For example, according to
http://www.globalissues.org/article/26/poverty-facts-and-statsSome 1.8 million child deaths each year as a result of diarrhoea. Just having some basic health information (as well as treatment and access to clean water for sure) has the potential to save many many lives.
I really like the fact that they have links to their clinical partners as this gives me some ideas on what I can do in the immediacy to help.
