Here's Toronto's (the city closest to me) resilience plan:
Adaptive Actions for Global Warming:
- Planting trees to increase shade and cool the air
- Water barrels to capture rainwater for reuse
- Using drought-resistant plants
- Using cool/reflective surface to reduce heat levels
Adaptive Actions for Flooding/Storm water:
- Using sustainable urban materials, including but not limited to permeable pavements, green roofs, constructed wetlands.
- Increase sewer volume and more redirects in case of overflow.
- Education on how to properly drain water from your home.
Adaptive Actions for Energy Conservation:
- Raise conservation and reducing peak loads during heat waves, reducing blackouts.
- More street tree planting and highly reflective surfaces to reduce the need for air conditioning.
- Expand energy system to help sustain transmissions during stormy weather.
Adaptive Actions for Transportation:
- Reevaluate the infrastructure during elevated water levels.
- Readjust vulnerable transportation systems, tunnels, bridges, subway entrances.
- Make sure that important parts are raised above flood levels.
- Make better use of salt
Adaptive Actions for Buildings:
- Design buildings for more natural ventilation.
- Make sure that building tops are tough enough to handle high wind speeds.
- Raise the ground level a bit higher, to prevent excessive water from entering.
- Take the increased incidence of natural disaster into account.
Adaptive Actions for Urban Ecosystems:
- Make more and preserve green areas.
- Protect ecosystems, like parks, ponds, lakes, etc.
- Ensure that conditions are met to help street trees survive and grow, conditions such as more space for roots, more watering and maintenance.
Adaptive Actions for Health:
- Education to the public on health threats tied to climate.
- Attempts to reduce air pollution and emissions.
- Attempts to reduce reduce health and security impacts.
