I've e-mailed the LifeWrap people about getting our hands on the actual product, how much it costs, training required to use it, etc.
Also, I've done some of the preliminary research in terms of my project for school: what postpartum haemorrhage is, the causes, prevention, management/treatment, and reasons why people die from it even though it's largely preventable and/or manageable.
A lot of it's quite medical though... are people interested? If yes, I can try translate from Medicalese to English...
Next part of the plan...
In Cape Town, where I live, we have the Peninsula Maternal and Neonatal Services (PMNS) looking after our moms and babies. This is a 3-tiered referral system, with 7 primary level facilities staffed by midwives, 2 secondary hospitals and 1 tertiary hospital staffed by nurses, doctors and specialists. At the primary level facilities, called Midwife Obstetrics Units (MOUs), they deal with normal healthy pregnancy and birth, and refer moms and babies with problems to secondary or tertiary levels.
I am going to consult the people in charge of the various MOUs to establish the following:
a) is post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) a problem in the setting?
b) what are the guidelines/protocols for managing PPH?
c) are they satisfied with the guidelines?
d) do they have the necessary resources to follow the guidelines?
In relation to the rest of South Africa, Cape Town (and the Western Cape) is pretty fortunate when it comes to public healthcare. So, this is possibly not the place with the biggest need.
But we'll just have to see what people say and take it from there...
