Describe the biggest challenge to food
security in your own local community or country -- and an
innovative solution that is already underway.
More than 12 percent of households in my city have been declared food insecure within the past 4 years. This rate has increase since 2003. Of the 12 percent, 4.2 have very low food security. In 2009, 19 percent of those surveyed stated that they did not have enough money to feed their families for an entire year.
40.6 of households with children are experiencing food hardship.
THIS HAS GOT TO STOP
DC Hunger Solutions has started to implement some action plans. Providing children with health breakfasts in the morning in DC public schools, as well as offering meals within the after school programs. This is helpful as children who are unable to receive healthy meals at their homes are able to in the safety of their schools.
In addition, the District has also loosened restrictions on Food stamps. They have expanded the conditions so that more individuals will be eligible for their use. These minor changes have allowed thousands of residents to begin to make active steps to feed their families.
