Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Although Kenyan and African, I have lived in all but 2 continents and consider myself a citizen of the world. But I have a stong connection with Africa which (not suprisingly) I consider the most beautiful place ever. "Popular" stories in the media focus on poverty, hunger, disease and debt - true challenges for most Africans. But what about the joy, generosity, crazy humour, rich history and culture; love for soccer, singing & education? What about the stunning landscape and wildlife? What about it being the cradle of mankind? What about the determination of many African to make a difference in Africa? What about beautiful Africa?

I am South African, but White. I understand when you talk about joy, generosity and crazy humour; stunning landscapes and wildlife. Poverty is real in Africa, but I think people from the developed world often see poverty as a different problem to how we do. If you can feed yourself and your family, and give your family the opportunities for self-improvement; health care; and freedom to try to fulfil their ambitions. That is not poverty. Although there are many places where people cannot achieve this, we must be careful to not force "developed" world ideas of normal life onto the folk in rural Africa. Be careful not to destroy their culture in our quest to provide people with a better life.

I'm Nigerian-American, and I hear you. Recently back in 2007, my World Affairs Council in the city I was living in at the time, decided to do a hopeful series on Africa and talk about the positives that are currently there and the positive changes that are unfolding. It was such a meaningful move for me. And you seem to understand that. I suppose beauty is not as sexy or sensational to the media. But we demand to know and see and experience the full story. Thanks for sharing.

+1 local insight. Yes, where problems are the focus, "joy, generosity and crazy humour; stunning landscapes and wildlife. " are only used to highlight thoseproblems. Here we are trying to shift the focus to innovation and problem solving!

Wonderful post and it makes me want to go to Africa. And yeah most people when they hear of Africa think only of the bad issues and nothing of the positive that makes up the continent. We need to make sure that if we plan on helping anyone we shoot for an accurate view of any location we are trying to help. It wouldn't help anyone to go around trying to fix things that aren't broken.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
