April 8th 2020: celebrating ten years of a happy marriage between me and my wife. I am Italian, she is Swedish-Ethiopian-Sudanese, we live in Costa Rica, part of my family is in Austria, so loved ones are all over the place.
We throw a party, and people convene. But we appreciate that traveling is tiresome and energy-hungry, so we want to give people ways to participate while not making the planet's energy bill any worse. We've thought up of two schemes.
One is an energy consumption saveup scheme, launched in 2019. Invitees - and us, of course -have made an extra effort to cut back their energy consumption by employing more of the usual package of energy saving measures (or producing some extra power by renewable means and feeding them to the grid). The savings goes into an "energy saving account" that "covers extra consumption required by trips for some of the guests.
The other is a mixed reality party setting, so that friends and family also have the option to participate from their homes, through avatars that show up as life-sized moving holograms. We have been hanging out socially in virtual worlds since 2006, so we're pretty accustomed to this. That's also covered by one year of concerted effort in saving energy.
The party is super special. Even people who are not physically there have put effort into this, and they can participate virtually. The common effort binds us even further.
