One of my favorite books of all time is Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison. My favorite character in the novel is Sol, a retired army engineer. What makes this character stand out, and what makes this relevant to Evoke (other than the nature of the novel itself) is Sol's invention, a Bicycle power generator. He used this generator to charge a bunch of old car batteries, which he used to power appliances around his apartment.
Now the interesting thing about this is such a generator is easily possible for a surprisingly low amount of money. The average high rated fridge consumes about 254 kWh / year. With that kind of consumption you would need a fair amount of car batteries, and you would need to run the thing daily to maintain the charge, but it is easily possible. The only difficult part would be actually building the thing, and making it safe. Now if you didn't want to run your fridge off the thing you could still run smaller appliances, and you wouldn't have to recahrge it as often.
