While working for a month in Dominican Republic, I felt a tremor, people was scared but thing went back to normal pretty quickly.
Coming from a country where earthquakes are the norm, and knowing how bd they can be, I looked in the internet to find the epicenter: off of Port-o-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
After doing more research, it was clear to me that water, health care and food were the most important factors to save people in there, and the slow response from abroad was not focusing in those element in that order.
A friend of mine, recommended me to check out pih.org (Partners In Health) and Dr. Paul Farmer.
Here was a man that was actually making a difference, in the ground, and who needed help,
We supported him that week, with our own money and by asking our colleagues for support, and have kept in touch until the devastating earthquake in Chile.
It has been enlightening reading his columns on the importance of working with locals and empowering to lead the charge in their countries.
Paul Farmer is my hero.
