Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Corruption, international bribery...and the World Bank?

There have been some questions about who the World Bank is, and what their motives are behind UrgentEvoke. I haven't paid it much attention, as I believe that there is a lot of good coming out of the project regardless as to what THEY get out of it. For instance, I've become extremely active in learning and teaching about the things brought up by the game. On top of that, I can see that at least a few of my friends have become interested and are also spreading the word. With all that said, I was a little disturbed by what I heard about them in this video. It's a little hard to understand, but if you make it through the first half, you'll hear a little bit about what this speaker had to go through in speaking up against the World Bank and how he suggests we can all overcome such obstacles.

Additional References about World Bank
  • Strategy for Anti-Corruption - Paints a different picture of the World Bank, BUT this comes from the World Bank's website so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
  • Article about World Bank being accused of corruption in 2004. This seems to be a relatively independent source. Here is the intro describing who they are.
  • Blog with a list of accusations and responses. Seems quite unofficial, but a good way to do more investigative follow-up to find out if there is anything behind these accusations.
  • Development Marketplace - A website run by the World Bank Institute (WBI), described as a platform for debate and knowledge sharing on early stage development, innovation and social entrepreneurship.

this is enlightenment langauge
it's a liberal, secular, democratic, humanist enterprise
what if one feels that democracy too has failed?
the reference to africa having special needs
the increased flows of foreign direct investment
full support to emerging democracies
support for peace keeping
support for consolidation of democracies already existent for political stability
a doc**ent signed by 195 countries
a veritable behemoth and words that can be read two ways
powerful human doc**ents that control our lives
what if .... something new is emerging , something that came into being becasue it felt that after democracy reached its peak it is now degenerating and a new multiplicity of methods of governance must be evolved....
what if
whatif
brilliant sean
thanks a lot

That money could and should go elsewhere - to all these people we're trying to help and inspire. Not to me. I'm absolutely content being compensated by watching the community here grow. My friends have met brilliant social innovators, I've seen life-changing projects come out of people, and I know that in some small way I helped contribute to that. That's worth a wh*** lot more than money.

Also, Jane McGonigal is quite possibly the coolest gal that ever lived, so any way to help her projects succeed and keep her changing the world I would do in a heartbeat regardless of compensation ;)

@Nicholas Cool that you're seriously investigating this. Initially we had a lot of people pretty furious at the idea of EVOKE purely because it was tied to the WB. It's great to see some cool-headed research into the different entities. Keep telling us what you find!

"possibly the coolest gal that ever lived." wow, no wonder i'm in love with her though that may also have something to do with her picture , it's quite beautiful like a william morris painting. and you're a real sweetheart, chelsea, too; purely altruistic and philanthropic. coming as i do from india i'd never really do anything without being paid for it
it's good to meet you folks
makes me think there's still some soul and heart left in the world.
i also think of all the people who got helped through kiva and the wonderful opportunity we had of meeting great social innovators on here.
evoke changed my entire life.
but i still don't get the connection between wb and wbi that you spoke of the bigger picture :(
i must be dumb

right sean monetary compensation is not important to me too im playing evoke for free and giving
what i get in return is knowledge
what it will pay me in the long run is a lot more than what i put in i guess
i'm just kidding
what i'm playing evoke for is for changing myself and helping others
who am i fooling :(

Part of the theory of fun and games is that the moment you externalize a reward people are less willing to strive for it. I think that being paid would actually demotivate me - then EVOKE would become an obligation, something I had to do, instead of this wonderful thing I am a part of and am striving to make better because of the people, the bonds, the results.

Right now all of the reward is internal, and I've always thought internal rewards were far greater than external ones. :)

it's all about a fire burning inside, a passion, being driven by it
an... ambition?

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
