If you are looking to become “food secure” or are working towards a
more self-sufficient lifestyle, then certain crops become very
important for the rural as well as the urban homestead.
I will mention just one right now, and that one is asparagus.
Why asparagus? OK, I’ll admit it, this is not, by far, my favorite
vegetable, BUT, it’s attributes make it a superstar for helping to gain
food independence.
A few of the main reasons for its high marks are:
1) it is very nutrient nutrient dense.
2)it is perennial!(comes back year after year all by itself!!)
3)once established, asparagus requires minimal care.
4) it creates a lush, high growing ferny patch that warms up the garden.
Do not be discouraged by the fact that it takes two to three years to
get established. It is well worth the effort. It is very rewarding to
watch the progress. If you happen to move, not to worry, you will have
increased your good karma by leaving someone an asparagus patch and
that will pay dividends when you probably need it most.
