I believe that by using energy units as a universal currency we could help to revalue what we use. This would allow us to set values for particular types of energy based around a host of different criteria and apply them equally around the world.
The article below gives a bit of the rationale but I think we should go further. If we wish to lower the value of fossil fuels we merely add a multiplier to clean fuels which makes them more valuable (or we add a "environment tax" to the payments for "dirty" energy). The idea that anywhere in the world you could exchange your money for an approximate worth in other products seems to ease many issues. It also means that the poor who use very little energy or who are inventive enough to make their own energy would find themselves with opportunities to save in a currency that couldn't be rendered worthless by government decisions or economic turmoil over debt.
