While some might consider it disadvantageous to select a deceased man as a mentor, this man has quite a following, and it's that mentality and attitude that I have chosen to shadow. Practical Action, based on Schumacher's principles of appropriate technology as outlined in his book 'small is beautiful', promotes the use of technologies, sociologies and resource availabilities local to an area. They really carry the torch for his legacy.
Schumacher really stood out, particularly against popular economists like Keynes, because of his humanitarian perspective, and his ability to question our ever expanding thirst for 'progress'. He made me really consider what I wanted for the world, and if we really needed jumbo jets and skyscrapers. Does the developing world really want what we want for them? Does it need that? Does economic growth really represent 'progress'? How do we define development?
These are all questions his book made me consider. I would recommend you read it. Seriously I don't have shares in it....
