It's hard to believe EsoZone's been going on for 13 years now. I try to go to every EsoZone I can during my travels, but the original Portland EsoZone remains my favorite.
EsoZone's become something more like a holiday than a than a discrete event, with dozens of parties and activities happening all weekend, but there does remain the core "official" unconference event.
Thanks to the venue's use of
passive solar, EsoZone uses very little electrical power.
The event is catered by
New Grub Cafe, and they use either local ingredients or ingredients transported using
carbon-negative shipping methods.
A sound system and projector are powered off Portland's electrical grid, which is powered by algae produced using
OMEGAs off the Oregon coast and regionally generated wind power from turbines built right here in Portland. There are also algae bioreactors in place as backup generators.
