A crash course in changing the world.
One year after the launch of the Global Partnership on Girls’ and Women’s Education, I would like to have a closer look at the outcomes of the most sucessfull projects. First of all, the projects addresses the two main areas secondary education and literacy. Here are some fact and figures.
- A Procter and Gamble funded project in Senegal which is focusing on “girls’ and women’s literacy”, opened 160 classrooms already in seven regions and trained 100 literacy trainers who are teaching 3,000 women.
- A project funded by the Packard Foundation aimed at empowering girls and keeping them in school. At the moment they work together already with 28 schools in Ethiopia and Tanzania.
- GEMS Foundation is funding gender-sensitive teacher training to encourage more girls to attend school and learn science and mathematics. As a first result, the Kenya Education Management Institute are already training teachers and school principals.
- Nokia is funding different projects with the aim to reduce the gender gap in access to mobile technology. As a result they provided education kits and digital resources to more than 1,200 teachers who will devote 600 hours of literacy and life skills teaching to girls in Senegal.
- Microsoft is promoting the use of mobile technologies for education, with a focus on girls and women. At the moment they have implemented the first apps.
If you know any more outcomes of UNESCO’s global partnership for girls’ and women’s education please let us know and share your information in a post.
