I grew up in a small town near a medium sized college town. Throughout my life I have seen the amount of farms in our area go under time and time again. Construction companies and other businesses have began to offer massive amounts of money to the farmers in the area so they can add townhouses, department stores, and markets to their property.
Though it's not a bad idea entirely, much of what we would already need is provided for our community already but it is a 20 minute drive.
To help with this problem our local Eagles and Lions club has started fund raising efforts to bring up the awareness of the lack of farming going on in the community. The money raised through the area is then donated to help the farmers in need with their crops for the year.
Sadly, I wish this was on the only challenge they faced but it seems that climate change is another they are looking at. It didn't seem like it would be a problem but this year we finally came out of the a winter season of which we hadn't seen since 1987. Quite a year it's already been and though, to my knowledge, nothing is being done about it yet - they're looking for some way to keep farming in this area as a major resource despite what seems to be, inevitable change.
