Food availability here is not essentially a problem. But that's not what food security is, is it? I don't know the facts and figures, but if there were some catastrophe that prevented international trade with the rest of the world, our food security could take a steep nose-dive. We would certainly lose out on more luxury items: chocolate, hot drinks, exotic fruits (even bananas!). These could be grown intensively using greenhouses and such, but given such a shortage, would we not be using ALL our land for more locally appropriate crops?
Upon accepting this task, I was reminded of the situation post 1939, where the UK was heavily dependent upon food imports. The Hugely successful German U-Boat operation put Britain into a crisis, and led to the development primarily of new anti-submarine tactics, but also and significantly, to rationing and the promotion of allotments and personal farming. Would we again return to such a solution? many families own significant patches of land, wand we can be quite inventive in the placing and allocation of allotments.
