Living in the midwest United States, we're constantly bombarded with the idea that there's a lot of food to go around, because there's nothing but farmland surrounding us. That's not quite accurate as the KC area is mostly urban now, but there still are many farms/farmers in the city and more in the state of Kansas. What I didn't know is that Kansas is currently tied for 9th place for household hunger among the 50 states.
For a state with an outward presence as well-fed, or well supplied, I'd say that's a shock. Some other things I found out about Food Security in Kansas:
From 2002 to 2004, one in eight Kansas households experienced food insecurity each year.
Households including children experience food insecurity at nearly twice the rate of those with only adult members
More than one in three households led by single mothers experience food insecurity
Food insecurity affects working families – nearly two-thirds of food insecure households have at least one member employed full-time
The good news is that there's a team of people working on this. There's a website:
http://www.kansasruralcenter.org/security.html where I found out about the issues with food security in Kansas and what's already been done to work on the issue. And there's a few good resources about what we can do locally to help.
