I'm fortunate to live in a rural area with a strong local food economy, easily accessible at the farmer's market. I've moved from a rural area where the fields were filled with sheep, but the only major food sources were supermarkets. Much like major cities, I was dependent on transportation to keep these shelves stocked and our buying habits not to fluctuate too greatly. During the swine flu crisis, recommendations to stockpile 2 weeks worth of food may have resulted in a food crisis, had everyone followed them.
Now my local food network is stronger, GM foods are the major risk to food security in my local area. With a growing network of seed savers and those practicing organic farming, potential cross pollination from GM seed is a concern and something I feel powerless over. The issue of food labelling is currently on the agenda.
