What began as a game for Shawna
Kigali has turned into so much more. At first soccer was simply a way to spend time with her friends when Shawna was done with chores. But thanks to the organization Women's Football for Unity, Shawna's team was able to practice regularly and compete against other villages in her region. Shawna did very well at soccer and was promoted to an all-star team where she was able to compete in the capital of Rawanda - a place that most women in her village had only heard about.
Soccer for Shawna was such a vital, life-changing experience that she decided to coach as she got older. The coaching experience put her in touch with empowered and determined women. It also convinced her to pursue higher education, even though this meant traveling by foot or bicycle to a neighborhood five miles away.
Eventually Shawna became a paralegal and a human aid specialist and is helping women fight for reproductive rights in the region where she grew up.
