A crash course in changing the world.
According to the Greennovate Environmental Challenge for Kids Outreach (GECKO), a small contribution is enough to support 5 Chinese girls to participate in the green ambassador program. Below is what I image each of them is doing in ten years.
Student 1: She is at a university in the final year of her Environmental Engineering Ph.D. She hopes to help China renovate its public infrastructure, while keeping mindful of the impact that its population and past practices have had on the environment. The new infrastructures will be healthier for the Chinese people and the environment.
Student 2: She returned to her home after the GECKO program and engaged members of her community in the formation of a sustainable living group. Together, they have sustained a community garden, which provides food to elders and children in the village who lack family support, and built a solar and wind-powered water purification system that helps bring safe drinking water to the community.
Student 3: She went on to study film and digital media arts. Subsequently, she started her own media production company that produces multimedia, such as movies and video games that doc**ent the environmental situations surrounding China. She has traveled the nation to tell stories of people and places that have been affected by environmental neglect. Her work also educates and inspires others to get involved in the sustainable living movement in China.
Student 4: She wrote a book about the history of environmental practices in China and how present practices need to be changed in order to preserve the future. She is currently touring China to share her insights, raise funds for environmental initiatives, and inspire others to get involved.
Student 5: She started a consulting company that helps businesses located in highly urbanized parts of China reform their environmental policies and infrastructures. Her work helps the companies to develop sustainable plans that are economically feasible and environmentally beneficial.
