Fascinated by EVOKE. Can this be used to build community in a local environment, too? Mission: provide teenage girls with the skills to navigate adolescence. Some of those skills: mindfulness techniques, self-defense, and adventure skills. Why?
a) Life is full of challenges. Own yourself.
b) Life is full of challenges. Be prepared.
c) Life is full of challenges. Have fun!
I'm inspired by these techniques mentioned in the first mission:
1. Constraint of resources: We live in the city. We don't have fancy studios, or lots of beautiful natural settings, or lots of time. But, we do have a few community centers, teachers willing to donate cla****, and a city that has undiscovered free outdoor activities. You just have to know where they are, and organize it, and teach the skills necessary to use it. We can do that.
2. Provide skills not technologies: These are things teenagers can take with them wherever they are. They don't need a lot of money, and each class provides a little nugget of an idea or technique they can take with them.
3. Innovate on existing platforms: This program builds on existing programs they're already familiar with. It uses the same strategies to reach teens and just takes it a little bit further.
There's more, but I thought this might be a useful introduction.
Now, we just need a decent name for the program. It's going to be cool, and the girls to whom I've mentioned it are already excited.
